Melbourne in October 2016: cool days, wet in the eastern parts
October rainfall was above average in eastern parts of the Melbourne metropolitan area. Daytime temperatures were generally below average, while overnight temperatures were generally close to average.
Wetter than average in the eastern suburbs
- Several cold fronts crossed the city during the month bringing cold and wet conditions
- October rainfall was close to average across the northern and western parts of the metropolitan area and above average in the eastern suburbs. Warburton was the wettest location, receiving a total of 205.0 mm during the month
- Rainfall was recorded on more than half of the days in the month. Cold fronts on the 16th and 21st resulted in daily rainfall totals in excess of 10 mm, especially over the eastern suburbs
- Melbourne City (Olympic Park) had 17 days with rainfall and a monthly total of 63.4 mm, in contrast to only 12.2 mm recorded at the same site in October 2015
Daytime temperatures mostly below average
- All Melbourne suburbs had cooler than average mean maximum temperatures
- Mean maximum temperatures ranged from 0.2 °C below the average at Scoresby Research Institute to 1.6 °C below the average at Viewbank
- Overnight temperatures were generally close to average, with most suburbs within 0.5 degrees of average. It was cooler than average at Wallan (Kilmore Gap) though, which had a mean minimum temperature 1.3 °C below the October average
- At Melbourne City (Olympic Park) daily temperatures exceeded 25 °C on only four days during October 2016. The warmest temperature recorded at Olympic Park during the month was 28.0 °C on the 30th
- In contrast, October 2015 saw, at the same site, six days with temperatures above 30 °C
- The mean maximum temperature at Melbourne City (Olympic Park) during October 2016 was 19.3 °C, while during October 2015 it was 24.3 °C
Strong and gusty winds
- Strong wind gusts occurred several times, particularly in the first part of the month; strongest wind gust, 119 km/h, was recorded at Fawkner Beacon on the 9th
- Strong and gusty winds associated with the passage of the cold front on the 9th resulted in downed trees, damaged homes and loss of electricity across the metropolitan area

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Melbourne using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 2 November 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
