Victoria in October 2016: above average rainfall, below average temperatures

Rainfall for Victoria as a whole was above average during October. Both maximum and minimum temperatures were generally cooler than average across the State.

Wetter than average, particularly in the north and west

  • Victorian rainfall was 26.5% above average, the highest October rainfall since 2010
  • Cold fronts crossed the State on the 2nd, 16th and 21st, bringing daily rainfall totals mostly in the 10 to 30 mm range
  • More rain, mostly in the east of the State, resulted from a low pressure trough on the 22nd, and the highest daily total in Victoria, 54.0 mm, at Erica (Parkers Corner), north of Traralgon, was recorded to 9 am on the 23rd
  • One site had its highest October daily rainfall on record, while some sites had their highest total October rainfall since at least 1995

Cooler than average days and nights

  • Mean maximum temperatures were cooler than average throughout most of Victoria's north. In the south daytime temperatures were close to average
  • Coastal Gippsland was the only area of the State to record average or warmer than average daytime temperatures for October
  • Overnight temperatures were cooler than average throughout much of Victoria
  • For the State as a whole, maximum temperatures were 0.63 °C below the average (lowest since 2003), while minimum temperatures were 0.27 °C below the average (lowest since 2012); this is in marked contrast to the record warm October 2015
  • Some sites had their lowest October mean daily minimum temperatures on record

Strong winds at times

  • Strong and gusty winds occurred several times during the month
  • Victoria's strongest recorded wind gusts for October were 137 km/h at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse on the 4th and at Mount Buller on the 9th
  • Damaging winds associated with the passage of a cold front on the 9th resulted in downed trees, damaged homes and a loss of electricity in parts of the State

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 2 November 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
