Melbourne in January 2017: mostly average rainfall with warm days and nights
Rainfall was mostly close to average across Melbourne during January. Mean maximum and minimum temperatures were warmer than average in all Melbourne suburbs.
Average to below average rainfall
- January rainfall was generally average across the Melbourne metropolitan area, except for some northern suburbs where it was below average
- The heaviest rainfall occurred early on the 20th as a low pressure system and an associated trough brought totals of 15 to 25 mm for most locations across Melbourne
- Ferny Creek was the wettest location, receiving a total of 69.8 mm during the month, most of which was recorded during the early hours of the 20th when 27.2 mm was observed
- There were 8 rainfall days observed at Melbourne (Olympic Park) resulting in a monthly total of 31.6 mm with 22.6 mm recorded in the early morning of the 20th
Above average temperatures
- All Melbourne sites had generally warmer than average days and nights
- For Greater Melbourne, the hottest temperature during January was 38.9 °C at Essendon Airport on the 17th, in a hot northerly airstream that preceded the approaching low pressure trough
- Melbourne (Olympic Park) reported its hottest day on the 17th with 37.8 °C
- The hottest night during January was on the 8th with the minimum temperature staying above 25 °C at most sites across the Melbourne metropolitan area
- Both Laverton and Moorabbin recorded their warmest January night on record on the 8th, while Melbourne (Olympic Park) had a minimum of 28.0 °C

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Melbourne using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Wednesday 1 February 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
