Melbourne in February 2017: above average rainfall in the east; close to average temperatures
Rainfall across Melbourne during February was above average in the eastern suburbs. Both mean maximum and minimum temperatures were close to average in all Melbourne suburbs.
Average to above average rainfall
- February rainfall was generally close to average except in the eastern and southeastern suburbs, where it was above average
- The heaviest rainfall during the month occurred on the 6th, when a cold front and an associated low pressure trough brought widespread rainfall across the Melbourne metropolitan area, with daily totals generally between 20 and 30 mm, and falls above 40 mm in most of the southeastern suburbs
- The highest daily total, 56.6 mm, was recorded at Main Ridge on the Mornington Peninsula, on the 6th
- Ferny Creek was the wettest location, receiving a total of 132.2 mm during the month
- Melbourne (Olympic Park) had only 6 days with rainfall; monthly total was 40.2 mm, most of which, 32.4 mm, fell to the 9 am on the 6th
Cooler than average temperatures
- Most Melbourne sites had cooler than average days and nights
- Mean maximum temperatures were mostly between 0.4 and 1.0 °C below the average, while mean minimum temperatures were between 0.7 and 1.4 °C below the average
- For Greater Melbourne the hottest temperature during February was 38.0 °C recorded at Bundoora on the 9th, while the coolest night saw 3.8 °C at Coldstream on the 19th
- At Melbourne (Olympic Park) daily temperatures during February exceeded 35.0 °C on only three days; the station reported its hottest days on the 8th and 9th with 36.0 °C on both days, in a hot northerly air-stream

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Melbourne using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 March 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
