February rainfall in Victoria was mostly average with areas of above average rainfall in the State's northwest and in parts of the south. Both day-time and overnight temperatures were mostly average across Victoria.
Mostly average rainfall
- Rainfall for Victoria as a whole was close the long-term average of 32.0 mm; it was the highest February rainfall since 2013
- Rainfall was above average in large areas of Mallee and North Wimmera Districts, as well as in parts of the West Coast and East Central Districts; below average rainfall was recorded only in a few patches, mostly in the east of the State
- On the 6th the cold front and an associated low pressure trough brought widespread rainfall across the State, with daily totals generally between 20 and 30 mm, and locally higher falls
- The highest daily rainfall total, 56.6 mm, was recorded at Main Ridge on the Mornington Peninsula on the 6th
- The low pressure system which moved south of Victoria on the 19th resulted in rainfall totals mostly between 5 and 10 mm
Mostly average temperatures

- The State experienced high day-time temperatures between the 8th and 10th, in a hot northerly air-stream preceding the approaching low pressure trough; during this period many sites across the State had their late season maximum temperature records; however, no new February maximum temperature records were set due to the exceptionally high temperatures on Black Saturday, 7 February 2009, as noted in the Special Climate Statement 61.
- The highest maximum temperature in Victoria during February was 46.9 °C, recorded at Walpeup Research on the 9th
- The mean minimum temperature was just below the average for Victoria, with an anomaly of −0.46 °C for the State as a whole, the lowest since 2008
- There were several cool nights during the month; particularly low minimum temperatures were on the 20th and 21st, when some sites had their lowest February temperature on record
- The lowest minimum temperature recoded in Victoria during the month was −2.2 °C at Mount Hotham on the 20th

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 March 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
