Victoria in July 2017: Drier than average, with a cold start and warm finish

July rainfall was generally average to below average across the State. This followed on from a record dry June, giving Victoria its second driest start to winter on record. Daytime temperatures were typically above average with some very warm days at the end of the month, including an equal Victorian July record at Mildura. Nights were generally colder than average, especially in northern and central parts that saw some record cold overnight temperatures near the start of the month.

Rainfall was generally below average, especially in the east

  • A large area in the southeast recorded rainfall in the lowest 10% of July totals, with rainfall averaged across the state the lowest since 2010.
  • The below average July following on from a record dry June gave Victoria its second driest start to winter on record (after 1982).
  • One site, Patyah (Booroopki), recorded its highest total July rainfall on record, though this site has a relatively short record.
  • Mildura Airport recorded 4.0 mm, its lowest total July rainfall for 20 years.

Cold nights at the start of the month, but a warm end

  • Mildura Airport in the northwest of the State observed the Victorian equal highest July temperature on the 29th July.
  • The start of the month saw some very cold nights across the State, with some long-term stations such as Rutherglen Research and East Sale Airport recording their lowest July temperature on record.
  • Some stations such as East Sale, Bairnsdale and Latrobe Valley Airport recorded their coldest night on record for any month, with Latrobe Valley Airport breaking this record on two successive nights.
  • Some sites such as Ararat and Bairnsdale had their highest July mean daily maximum temperature on record.
  • The statewide maximum temperature for Victoria was 1.14 °C above average, the sixth highest on record.

A windy end to the month

  • Although the strongest wind gust for the month, 128 km/h, was on the 20th at Wilsons Promontory, there were more widespread strong winds across the State on the 29th. These included a maximum wind gust of 120 km/h at Mt Hotham and 104 km/h at Melbourne Airport. There were reports of building damage and trees being blown over.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 August 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
