Monday, 2 October 2017 - Monthly Climate Summary for Victoria - Product code IDCKGC16R0
Victoria in September 2017: Dry in the north, wet in the south; mild temperatures
September rainfall in Victoria was below average across most of the State, particularly across the northern districts. Coastal areas saw average to above average rainfall. Mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were near average across the State as a whole, though clear skies saw cooler than average nights across northern parts. A warm spell in the third week saw several locations report their warmest September day on record.
Below average rainfall in the north and above average in some southern coastal regions
- The succession of cold fronts that passed through Victoria in the first two weeks of September brought some good rainfalls to coastal regions that saw several locations report their wettest September for at least 20 years
- The rainfall associated with the fronts didn't extend to the interior of the state, resulting in several stations recording their driest September for at least 20 years
Warmer days in the northwest cooler nights in across the north
- Average maximum temperatures were recorded through most of the central regions of Victoria, below average temperatures in the Western Plains and West Coast, while the Mallee and North Wimmera recorded above average September maximum temperatures
- A warm spell in the third week of the month saw several locations report their highest September temperature on record. In particular, Mildura set a new State record for Victoria on the 23rd with 37.7 °C; the previous record was 37.4 °C also at Mildura on 22 September 2003. The warm temperatures were the result of a high pressure cell located in the Tasman that brought warm air from the interior of the continent
- The warm spell saw Combienbar and Mount Baw Baw, both Alpine sites, recorded their warmest September night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record
- The cold fronts at the beginning of the month resulted in several stations (Dartmouth Reservoir, Port Fairy and Cape Nelson Lighthouse) recording their coldest September day (lowest maximum temperature) on record
- Cold nights during the month saw Avalon Airport and Swan Hill aerodrome report their coldest September temperature on record
Wind and Snow
- During the first week of September, a strong cold front crossing south of Australia extended a pool of cold air over Victoria bringing showers, thunder and small hail. Strong winds during 3rd to 9am on 4th included 115 km/h at Mt Buller and 107 km/h at Mt Hotham 103 km/hr at Port Fairy
- Snow was reported down to low levels with reports of snow settling at Lorne, Beech Forest and other towns in the Otways
- The passage of a fast moving cold front on the morning of the 30th, across southern Victoria, produced a wind gust of 141 km/h at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse
- A cold front on the 18 September resulted in strong winds. Mt William recorded 117 km/h, Wilson Promontory and Melbourne airport 94 km/h, Cape Otway 87 km/h and Mt Hotham 85 km/h

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 October 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
