Victoria in April 2018: very warm with below average rainfall

April was drier than average across most of Victoria, particularly in parts of East Gippsland where it was lowest on record. For the State as a whole this was the driest April since 1997. Victoria's daytime temperature was second-warmest on record

Below average rainfall

  • Large areas of Victoria had April rainfall that was very much below April average, while in parts of East Gippsland it was lowest on record
  • For the State as a whole, it was the driest April since 1997; total monthly rainfall was 68.5% below the long-term mean of 51 mm
  • Many sites had their lowest total April rainfall on record and lowest total April rainfall for at least 20 years
  • A pair of cold fronts and a low pressure trough which crossed Victoria between the 13th and 15th brought widespread rainfall, with daily totals mostly between 10 and 30 mm
  • The highest daily rainfall total in the State, 87.4 mm, was recorded at Mt Buller on the 16th; this was also a highest April daily rainfall on record for this site
  • The wettest place during the month was also Mt Buller, with 153.0 mm

Warm temperatures

  • Averaged across Victoria, April's mean temperature and maximum temperature were second-warmest on record
  • The Victorian mean temperature was 2.20 °C warmer than the April average, the highest April mean temperature since 2005
  • The Victorian maximum temperature was 3.45 °C warmer than the April average, the highest April daytime temperature since 2005
  • Between the 8th and 13th, high pressure systems directed warm air from the north over Victoria; during this warm spell many places across the State had daily maximum temperatures of above 30 °C; a large number of sites had their highest April temperature on record
  • Warm weather that affected much of Australia, was detailed in a Special Climate Statement
  • The highest maximum temperature in Victoria, 39.3 °C, was recorded at Mildura Airport on the 10th and at Hopetoun Airport on the 11th, breaking the previous Victorian state record, 37.8 °C, set in Mildura in 1986
  • Mildura also recorded four consecutive days over 35 °C, beating the previous record of two consecutive days in April 2005
  • Many sites had their highest April mean daily maximum temperature on record, exceeding their previous records set mostly in 2005
  • The Victorian minimum temperature was 0.94 °C warmer than the April average
  • There were several warm nights during the month; very warm night-time temperatures were recorded on the 12th, particularly in the central and northern parts of the State where many sites had their warmest April night on record
  • The warmest night-time temperature in Victoria, 24.2 °C, was recorded at Kerang on the 12th
  • Many sites had their highest April mean temperature on record

Wind and snow

  • A pair of strong cold fronts which crossed Victoria on the 13th and 14th accompanied with damaging wind gusts, brought a sharp decrease in temperatures to the State and snow to Victorian Alps
  • The strongest winds for the month were recorded on the 15th, with gusts of 128 km/h reported at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 May 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
