Greater Melbourne in September 2018: drier than average with cool nights

September rainfall was very much below average throughout Greater Melbourne. Daytime temperatures in September were generally warmer than average, while nights were cooler than average.

Drier than average

  • September rainfall was below to very much below average at all sites across Greater Melbourne
  • In the city, Melbourne (Olympic Park) recorded 16.4 mm for the month, making it the city's fifth-driest September on record and the driest since 2008 when just 12.0 mm was recorded at the old Melbourne Regional Office site
  • Melbourne (Olympic Park) had no days during the month with a rainfall total of more than 5.0 mm, which is only the second time that has happened in September since rainfall records began in the city in 1855, and the first time since 1907
  • Monthly rainfall totals ranged from 24% of average at Laverton RAAF to 63% of average at Cerberus
  • Laverton RAAF had its lowest total September rainfall on record and several sites had their lowest total September rainfall since 1981

Cool nights, warm days

  • Daytime temperatures around Greater Melbourne were generally warmer than average during September
  • Melbourne's two warmest days for the month were on the 11th and 27th, when warm northerly winds ahead of cold fronts resulted in maximum temperatures in the mid-20s and the warmest days since autumn
  • The hottest temperature recorded in Greater Melbourne for the month was 25.3 °C at Laverton RAAF on the 27th
  • Mean maximum temperatures ranged from 0.3 °C cooler than average at Viewbank to 0.8 °C warmer than average at Essendon
  • Night time temperatures were cooler than average at all sites around Greater Melbourne
  • Mean minimum temperatures ranged from 2.6 °C cooler than average at Coldstream to 0.2 °C cooler than average at Essendon Airport
  • Coldstream had its lowest September mean daily minimum temperature on record and equalled its lowest September mean temperature on record, while Melbourne Airport had its lowest September mean daily minimum temperature since 1982

  • Total rainfall for Melbourne (Olympic Park) was 16.4 mm
  • The mean daily maximum temperature for Melbourne (Olympic Park) was 17.2 °C. The warmest day was 24.2 °C on the 27th, and the coolest day was on the 2nd when the temperature reached 12.3 °C
  • The mean daily minimum temperature for Melbourne (Olympic Park) was 8.1 °C. The coldest morning was 3.4 °C on the 4th, and the warmest morning was on the 6th when the minimum temperature was 13.8 °C

Strong winds at times

  • The strongest wind gust recorded in Greater Melbourne during September was 93 km/h at South Channel Island on the 11th
  • Associated with a cold front, numerous sites around Melbourne recorded gusts in excess of 80 km/h on the 15th
  • After two months of windy conditions in July and August, the total wind run at sites around Greater Melbourne for September was close to average

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Greater Melbourne using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This summary includes data from observing sites in or near the Greater Melbourne “Greater Capital City Statistical Area” (GCCSA). The Australian Bureau of Statistics designed the GCCSAs to “include the population within the urban area of the city, as well as people who regularly socialise, shop or work within the city, and live in small towns and rural areas surrounding the city. It is important to note that GCCSAs do not define the built up edge of the city. They provide a stable definition for these cities and are designed for the output of a range of social and economic survey data.”

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 October 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
