Victoria in November 2019: rainfall and temperatures close to average

Rainfall in November 2019 was close to average over most of Victoria. November was wetter than average in the far southwest and the West Gippsland district, but drier than average in a few pockets across the northeast. Daytime temperatures were generally close to average, while night-time temperatures were cooler than average in most of Victoria, with areas of very much cooler than average nights in the State's west

Near average rainfall

  • Victoria's rainfall this month was mostly close to average. Areas of wetter than average conditions were in the far southwest and the West Gippsland district, but drier than average in a few pockets across the northeast
  • State-wide, November rainfall was 15.0 % below the long-term average of 52 mm
  • Low pressure systems and associated troughs brought widespread moderate rainfall totals across Victoria between 2 and 8 November, with locally heavy falls mostly in the Alpine and southern parts of the State
  • Little rain fell across Victoria for two weeks through the middle and second part of November, while the month finished with moderate falls (on the 26th, 27th and 30th), mostly in Victoria's east
  • Buln Buln and Mount Best in the State's east, had their highest total November rainfall for at least 20 years
  • Victoria's rainfall since January has been below average across most of the State, with large areas very much drier than average

Close to average daytime temperatures, cool nights in the west

  • Night-time temperatures were cooler than average in most of Victoria, with areas of very much cooler than average nights in the State's west
  • Aireys Inlet and Port Fairy had their lowest November mean daily minimum temperature on record, while many sites had their lowest November mean daily minimum temperature for at least 20 years
  • State-wide mean minimum temperature was 0.28 °C below the long-term average for November, the coolest since 2013
  • Daytime temperatures in November were close to average across most of the State; days were warmer than average in Gippsland but cooler than average in the southwest
  • Victoria's mean maximum temperature was only 0.01 °C above the long-term average for November
  • A series of cold fronts crossed the State between the 4th and the 9th, bringing cool daytime and night-time temperatures across Victoria
  • The coldest day in Victoria this month saw −0.6 °C at Mount Buller on the 8th, while the coldest night-time temperature was −6.3 °C at Mount Hotham on the 9th
  • Temperatures reached into the 40s at many locations (including Greater Melbourne) on the 20th and 21st, and some sites in Victoria's west and north had early season maximum temperature records
  • Many sites had their highest November temperature on record
  • The warmest temperature in the State during the spring was 43.6 °C recorded at both Kyabram and Swan Hill Aerodrome on 21 November
  • Victoria's mean maximum temperature for the January to November period was the sixth-highest on record

Strong winds, snow and fires

  • Snow fell in the Victorian Alps in a wake of cold fronts that crossed the State between the 4th and the 9th, with further snow falling on the 25th
  • A cold front and associated trough crossed Victoria on the 21st, generating a line of thunderstorms; lightning strikes and hot, gusty winds resulted in more than 60 fires across the State
  • A Code Red (catastrophic fire danger) was declared for the Mallee and Northern Country regions on the 21st and many schools and childcare centres in these areas were closed; the last time a Code Red was declared in Victoria was in January 2010
  • In East Gippsland, fires near Bruthen, Ensay and Gelantipy have burnt thousands of hectares of bush
  • Strong winds on the 21st blew debris into powerlines, leaving thousands of Victorians without power, and caused a dust storm that affected the Mildura region, with visibility at Mildura Airport occasionally reduced to as low as 500 m

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 2 December 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
