Victoria in December 2019: cool start then the hottest day on record; very dry in the east and much of the south

The first part of the month was relatively cool, but the 20th brought record high temperatures to most of Victoria, including a December State record of 47.9 °C at Hopetoun Airport and Horsham Aerodrome. Large areas of the State were much drier than usual.

Third-driest December on record

  • Below to very much below average rainfall was recorded across most of Victoria
  • The statewide average rainfall total was 78% below the December average of 48 mm; it was the third-lowest December rainfall total on record, and the lowest since 1972
  • Eastern and most of western Victoria received very little rain, with large areas receiving less than 10 mm of rainfall for the whole month
  • The highest monthly total of 58.6 mm was recorded at Balook, east of Melbourne
  • Some sites had their lowest total December rainfall on record or their lowest total December rainfall for at least 20 years

A cool start, then record heat

  • Mean maximum temperatures for December were much warmer than average across most of Victoria, while in the north they were highest on record
  • Some sites in the State's north had their highest December mean daily maximum temperature on record
  • Statewide, mean maximum temperature was 3.13 °C warmer than December average, the second-warmest December on record, about 0.5 °C cooler than the highest recorded in 2015
  • The month started off cool, with some sites having their coldest December day (lowest maximum temperature) on record on the 1st and 2nd
  • The 20th and the 30th were exceptionally hot throughout Victoria, and many sites had their highest December temperature on record
  • Hopetoun Airport and Horsham Aerodrome reached 47.9 °C on the 20th, the highest December temperature ever reported in Victoria, exceeding by more than one degree the previous December record of 46.6 °C set at Robinvale on 31 December 1976
  • All of Victoria recorded accumulated Forest Fire Danger Index values for December in the highest 10% of historical records, and highest on record for December over the north and northwest of the State and in East Gippsland
  • Gippsland experienced the highest daily values of the Forest Fire Danger Index for December over 30 and 31 December
  • The hot days were followed by warmest December nights (highest daily minimum temperature) on record at some sites
  • The Victorian mean temperature was 2.22 °C warmer than average, the third-warmest on record for December, while the State's mean minimum temperature was 1.31 °C above average

Smoke, fires and Pyro-cumulonimbus

  • In addition to fires still burning from earlier ignitions, a number of significant new fires commenced in East Gippsland during December
  • Widespread areas of smoke extended across eastern and southern Victoria on the 23rd, from fires burning in NSW, Gippsland and southwest Victoria, and persisted over several days
  • Some fires were so big that they created their own storms; a Pyro-cumulonimbus cloud formed over firegrounds in the East Gippsland area on the 30th, generating lightning
  • During December, fires burnt more than 230 000 hectares in East Gippsland, while across Victoria, fire damaged 400 000 hectares
  • Thousands of properties in East Gippsland and northeast Victoria lost electricity due to fires

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Monday 6 January 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
