Victoria in November 2020: drier and much warmer than average

Rainfall in November 2020 was below average for Victoria as a whole. Both daytime and night-time temperatures were much warmer than average in all areas of Victoria.

Below average rainfall

  • State-wide November rainfall was 35% below the long-term average of 52 mm.
  • Most of eastern Victoria and large areas in the north-west were drier than average, while parts of Northeast and West Gippsland districts were much drier than average.
  • Most of the north-western part of the state received less than 10 mm of rainfall during the month.
  • A deep low pressure system and a slow moving low pressure trough brought widespread rainfall to Victoria on the 11th, with daily totals mostly between 10 mm and 20 mm.
  • Another low pressure system and the associated low pressure trough moved over Victoria on the 22nd and 23rd; thunderstorms, locally severe, affected southern parts of the state on the 22nd.
  • On the 23rd, Moorabbin Airport recorded 63.2 mm, its highest November daily rainfall on record, and the highest daily rainfall recorded in Victoria this month.

Second-warmest November on record

  • Victoria's overall mean temperature was 3.18 °C warmer than the November average, making it the second-warmest November on record and the warmest since 2009.
  • State-wide, the mean maximum temperature was 3.85 °C above the long-term November average, also the second-warmest on record, and the warmest days since 2009.
  • In large parts of Victoria's north and west, mean maximum temperatures were more than 4 °C above average.
  • Aireys Inlet had its highest November mean daily maximum temperature on record, while Cape Otway Lighthouse had its highest November mean daily maximum temperature since 1907
  • Daily maximum temperatures were more than 8 degrees above the November average across Victoria on the 3rd, 10th, 15th, 19th, 22nd and 27th, due to a warm northerly airstream.
  • The highest temperature recorded for the month was 45.8 °C at Ouyen on the 28th, which was Victoria's equal-highest tempeature on record for November.
  • Some sites had their highest November temperature on record on the 28th.
  • The state's highest night-time temperature this month was 24.4 °C, recorded at Mildura Airport on the 28th.
  • State-wide, the mean minimum temperature was 2.51 °C above the long-term November average, the fifth-warmest on record.

Strong winds and dust

  • Damaging northerly winds affected much of western and central Victoria on the 15th and 16th; the strongest wind gusts of 120 km/h were recorded at Mount Buller and Mount Hotham on the 16th; Victoria's State Emergency Services received more than 1000 calls for help, mostly for fallen trees and building damage; many properties were left without electrical power.
  • Dry lightning started fires in different parts of the State on the 15th, particularly across the Mallee and Wimmera.
  • Strong winds raised dust on the afternoon of the 15th and visibility was reduced to 3000m at Mildura.
  • Thunderstorms, locally severe, affected parts of southern Victoria on the 22nd; approximately 300,000 lightning strikes were recorded in the 24 hours to 9am on the 23rd. The State Emergency Services received more than 300 calls for assistance on the 22nd, mostly for fallen trees, flooding and building damage.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 December 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
