Widespread daily totals between 10 and 20 mm were recorded across Mallee and Wimmera, with higher daily totals, locally exceeding 30 mm, through the Northern Country, North-Central and North-East districts.
  • A pair of cold fronts on the 17th and 18th resulted in gusty thunderstorms and heavy showers.
  • A low pressure system that developed over the New South Wales on the 21st brought showers and rain mostly to Victoria's north-west, with many sites recording daily totals between 20 and 30 mm.
  • Close to the end of the month, a low pressure trough and a low-pressure system centred over southern New South Wales resulted in widespread showers and rain between the 27th and 29th, with highest daily totals exceeding 60 mm at many sites in East Gippsland.
  • The highest daily total was 76.2 mm at Weeragua (Cann River) on the 29th.
  • Some sites had their highest September daily rainfall on record
  • Some sites had their highest total September rainfall on record or their highest total September rainfall for at least 20 years
  • Over September there was minor to moderate flooding in many catchments through central and northern Victoria.
  • Over the first 9 months of this year, statewide rainfall was 12% above average.

  • Some sites had their lowest September mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years
  • The 12th was the coldest day with a maximum temperature of −0.8 °C at Mount Baw Baw.
  • The warmest day was 23.7 °C at Morwell on the 22nd.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the third working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Sunday 2 October 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
