Victoria in November 2022: fifth-wettest November on record, cold days

Rainfall in November was above average across Victoria, with large parts of the state having very much above average rainfall. Maximum temperatures were very much below average across most of Victoria. Minimum temperatures were below average in large parts of the state's north, and above average in the southern half of the South-West district.

Fifth-wettest November on record

  • Rainfall in November was above average across Victoria, with large parts of the state having very much above average rainfall.
  • State-wide, rainfall was around 96% above the 1961-1990 November average of 52.0  mm, the fifth-highest on record and the highest November rainfall since 1954.
  • A warm and humid northerly airflow, directed over north-eastern Australia by a high pressure system in the Tasman sea, combined with surface troughs and generated isolated showers between the 8th and 14th; a surface trough associated with a low pressure system brought severe thunderstorms and widespread rainfall on the 13th and 14th, with daily totals exceeding 50 mm at many sites.
  • The highest daily total this month was 88.2 mm at Tawonga on the 14th.
  • Some sites had their highest November daily rainfall on record on the 13th and 14th.
  • A pair of cold fronts crossed Victoria on the 19th and 20th; parts of the state experienced thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, hail and damaging winds.
  • With 394.6 mm in total, the wettest place in Victoria this November was Mount Hotham.
  • Many sites had their highest total November rainfall on record, or highest total November rainfall for at least 20 years.
  • Averaged across the state, the year-to-date rainfall total for January to November was around 829 mm, 35% above average and the highest since 1974.

Coldest days since 1992

Thunderstorms, flash floods, hail and snow

  • On the 1st, snow settled in Alpine regions and snow flurries were observed at elevations as low as 670 m, including Barkstead near Ballarat.
  • Parts of Greater Melbourne, experienced thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and flash flooding on the 8th.
  • On the 13th, severe storms delivered a month's worth of rain to parts of central Victoria (Mornington Peninsula, Lethbridge, Macedon Ranges, Oakleigh South). Many roads were closed due to flash flooding.
  • Heavy rainfall over the 13th and 14th resulted in rapid river and creek rises and renewed riverine flooding.
  • Snow settled across elevated parts of Victoria on the 15tth and 16th.
  • Severe thunderstorms developed on the 21st; strong winds downed trees, while hail was recorded in parts of Greater Melbourne, and snow in the Alpine areas (more than 15 cm of new snow at Mount Hotham).
  • Damaging to destructive wind gusts were associated with a passage of cold fronts on the 19th and 20th. The strongest wind gust in Victoria this November, 130 km/h, was recorded at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse on the 21st.
  • Northerly winds on warm dry days during November lifted large amounts of pollen into the air in Victoria; this combined with thunderstorms on several days, leading to an increased risk of Thunderstorm Asthma, particularly on the 10th, 13th, 19th and 26th.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the third working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Friday 2 December 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
