Rainfall
April rainfall was below to very much below average for western parts of WA including the Pilbara, inland Gascoyne, Central Wheatbelt and Great Southern. Several sites in the Central Wheatbelt registered no rainfall for the month. Above to very much above average rainfall occurred in eastern parts of the state including in the Kimberley, Interior, Goldfields and Eucla. Averaged across the state, the rainfall for April 2010 was near average, but was below average for southwest WA (southwest of a line from Jurien to Bremer Bay) (see April rainfall decile map).
Some sites had their highest April rainfall on record.
Maximum temperature
Above to very much above average mean maximum temperatures were recorded over central and eastern WA, with up to 4 °C above normal mean maxima in the central Interior. Below average mean maximum temperatures were mainly confined to the west coast, where up to 2 °C cooler than normal maxima occurred between Carnarvon and Geraldton (see April maximum temperature anomaly map). When averaged over the whole state, April 2010 saw the 5th highest mean maximum temperature since comparable records commenced in 1950.
Some sites had their highest April temperature on record.
Minimum temperature
Above to very much above average mean minimum temperatures were recorded across most of the state, with up to 4 °C above normal mean minima in the west Kimberley, southern Interior and Eucla (see April minimum temperature anomaly map). Similar to maximum temperatures, parts of west coast WA saw below average mean minima, along with parts of the South Coastal district, however departures from normal were generally less than 1 °C. When averaged over the whole state, April 2010 saw the 2nd highest mean minimum temperature on record.
Sites in the west Kimberley, east Pilbara, Interior, Goldfields and Southeast Coastal recorded their warmest April mean minima on record, with Broome Airport exceeding its previous highest minimum temperature for April of 29.3 °C on three occasions (29.4 °C on the 1st, 29.4 °C on the 4th and 29.6 °C on the 5th).
Some sites had their warmest April night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record. Some sites had their highest April mean daily minimum temperature on record.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 3 May 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 30 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
