Rainfall
Rainfall was above average for WA as a whole in December, mainly as a result of record high rainfall in the third week of the month in the Gascoyne and adjacent parts of neighbouring districts. Above average rainfall was also recorded in parts of the Kimberley, whilst below average rainfall was reported in parts of the southern Interior and the Eucla (see December rainfall totals & decile maps). The Lower Southwest region of WA (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) recorded near average rainfall in December.
A monsoon low developed on 15 December, about 520 kilometres northwest of Exmouth, moving slowly southeast and crossing the Gascoyne coast on the 18th. Heavy rainfall began in the Gascoyne during the 16th and continued until the 18th, with large parts of the west Gascoyne recording over 150 mm and a few sites recording over 300 mm. The significance of the rainfall event can be put in context by the fact that the December mean rainfall for the region is in the order of 5 mm, whilst mean annual rainfall is between 200 mm and 300 mm. Several locations recorded their annual average rainfall in one or two days during the event and many locations broke their December daily and monthly rainfall record during the event. Carnarvon Airport recorded 207.8 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 17th, which is the wettest day on record for Carnarvon since records commenced in 1883, easily breaking the previous record of 119.4 mm observed at the Post Office on the 24th March 1923. The average rainfall for December for Carnarvon Airport is 1.8 mm, whilst the annual average rainfall is 226.7 mm. Carnarvon also registered its wettest month on record, with a December total of 255.0 mm at Carnarvon Airport, breaking the previous record of 219.7 mm recorded at the Post Office in June 1895.
Maximum temperature
Mean maximum temperatures were above average in December in the Interior and adjacent parts of the Gascoyne and Pilbara, as well as near the WA west coast, with mean maximum temperatures up to 3 °C above normal in the central Interior. In contrast, the east Kimberley, coastal Pilbara, inland Gascoyne, eastern Southwest Land Division (SWLD) and Eucla recorded below average mean maxima, with up to 3 °C below normal mean maxima along parts of the WA south coast (see December maximum temperature decile & anomaly maps). When averaged over the whole state, December 2010 was near average in terms of mean maximum temperature.
Meakatharra Airport recorded its lowest daily maximum temperature for December on record on the 17th as a result of heavy rainfall. Western parts of the SWLD experienced hot and humid conditions during the Christmas and New Year period, and Eneabba in the Central West recorded its hottest December day on record on the 27th with 45.9 °C.
Minimum temperature
Mean minimum temperatures in December were above to very much above average across large parts of WA, particularly in the western Pilbara and northwest Gascoyne where minimum temperatures were up to 3 °C above normal. Learmonth Airport recorded its highest mean minimum temperature for December on record. Giles in the eastern Interior recorded its highest December overnight temperature on record on the last day of the month.
In contrast, much of the Kimberley recorded below average to very much below average mean minima (see December minimum temperature decile & anomaly maps), however when averaged over the whole state, mean minimum temperatures in December 2010 were above average.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Tuesday 4 January 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available
years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for
sites with less than 10 years of record.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
Records in this summary are based on sites with at least 30 years of data.
*For PDF files of Perth Metro climate statistics for other months, please click here for extremes and here for averages.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
