Rainfall
Rainfall during January 2011 was above average for much of WA, apart from localised areas in the southern Kimberley and in the Interior (see January 2011 rainfall totals & deciles). Very much above average monthly totals were observed in parts of western and northern WA; with areas of highest on record in the north Kimberley, Pilbara, inland Gascoyne, Southwest, and Great Southern. When averaged across the state, rainfall during January 2011 was very much above average and ranked as the 13th wettest January since comparable records commenced in 1900; while the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) observed its 6th wettest January on record.
An active monsoon season in the north of the state, as a result of a strong La Nina and aided by record warm waters off the WA north coast, resulted in a few sites in the Kimberley breaking their highest January rainfall records, while Anna Plains also broke its highest January daily rainfall record at the beginning of the month in heavy thunderstorms. Kuri Bay in the Kimberley recorded 1438.2 mm during January 2011, which is the highest monthly rainfall total ever recorded in WA, breaking the previous record of 1321.7 mm set at Roebuck Plains in the Kimberley in January 1917. In addition to the wettest month on record, Kuri Bay also observed WA's 5th highest two-day rainfall total, with 617.4 mm on the 10th and 11th (228.8 mm and 388.6 mm respectively); and WA's 9th highest three-day rainfall total with 675.4 mm on the 10th, 11th and 12th (228.8 mm, 388.6 mm and 58.0 mm respectively). The monthly total at Kuri Bay was probably higher than observed given that the rainfall gauge overflowed before the observer was able to check the total on the very heavy rainfall day of the 11th, when 388.6 mm was recorded.
Tropical Cyclone Bianca brought heavy rainfall to the Pilbara coast late in January and Mardie recorded a daily fall of 191.0 mm on the 28th, its third highest January daily rainfall. This contributed substantially to a monthly total of 248.6 mm that was a January record for Mardie from observations that commenced in 1886. Frequent storms also brought record monthly rainfall totals to a few stations in the central Gascoyne.
Above average rainfall in the southwest of the state, mainly due to a cold front interacting with tropical moisture on the 5th and a line of storms on the 29th, resulted in Cape Naturaliste and Jarrahwood in the Southwest district, as well as Woodanilling in the Great Southern observing their highest January monthly rainfall totals, while several other sites observed their highest January rainfall in at least 30 years. Frankland in the South Coastal district broke its highest daily rainfall record with 33.0 mm on the 6th as the cold front crossed the southwest of WA.
Maximum temperature
Monthly mean maximum temperatures were above to very much above average in the west Gascoyne, Southwest Land Division (SWLD) southern Goldfields, Eucla and much of the Interior, with an area of 3 °C to 4 °C above normal in the central Interior, where some sites recorded one of the hottest Januarys on record. In contrast, the northern Gascoyne, Pilbara and Kimberley observed below to very much below average daytime temperatures, with the north Kimberley up to 3 °C below normal (see January 2011 mean maximum temperature decile & anomaly maps) as a result of an active monsoon. When averaged across the state, January 2011 was near average in terms of mean maximum temperature; however, in the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) January 2011 was the 12th hottest January on record . Comparable records began in 1950.
Very hot conditions were experienced in the southeast of WA during the last few days of the month, with many sites observing daily maximum temperatures in the mid-to-high 40's. Salmon Gums Research Station in the Southeast Coastal and Giles Meteorological Office in the eastern Interior both broke their highest daily maximum temperature records on the 28th. Forrest in the Eucla recorded 48.4 °C on the 30th, the highest temperature recorded in WA in January 2011, however this was not enough to break the previous Forrest and WA January record of 49.8 °C set on 13 January 1979.
Minimum temperature
Mean minimum temperatures were above to very much above average over much of WA during January 2011, with areas of highest on record in the eastern Interior, western Pilbara and parts of the Gascoyne, with an area of 4 to 5 °C above normal in the eastern Interior. Numerous sites scattered through WA recorded their highest January mean minimum temperature on record. In contrast, the north and west Kimberley was below to very much below average due to the active monsoon and above average rainfall. (see December minimum temperature decile & anomaly maps). When averaged across the state, January 2011 was the hottest January since comparable records began in 1950, and in fact the last four years in WA have seen the four hottest Januarys on record. The Lower Southwest recorded its 3rd hottest January on record in January 2011.
A very hot night was experienced at Eucla on the 30th with a minimum of 30.7 °C, breaking the previous hottest night on record of 30.2 °C set on 26 February 2009 (the previous January record was 28.0 °C on 24 January 2003). This extreme minimum came after Eucla recorded its highest maximum for the month of 47.1 °C on the 29th, not far below Eucla's record of 47.9 °C on 3 January 1979.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 February 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available
years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for
sites with less than 10 years of record.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Records in this summary are based on sites with at least 30 years of data.
