Western Australia in June 2015: Dry with record warm days

For Western Australia as a whole, it was a record warm June in terms of the mean maximum temperature, and also above average in terms of the mean minimum temperature. State-wide rainfall was below average, and it was the sixth driest June on record for the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay).

  • Highest mean maximum temperature on record for WA
  • Above average mean minimum temperature for WA
  • Sixth driest June on record for the Lower Southwest

Below to very much below average rainfall was reported in much of the South West Land Division (SWLD) in June 2015, as well as in parts of the Kimberley, Pilbara, Northern and Southern Interior, where little or no rain fell. Pockets of above average rainfall were observed in the Gascoyne, Goldfields, western Eucla, and Southeast Coastal. When averaged across WA, rainfall was below average. Total rainfall averaged across the SWLD was also below average, whilst it was the sixth driest June for the Lower Southwest since comparable records commenced in 1900, due to a lack of frontal systems during the month. The month's only major rain event occured across western and southern WA from the 16th to 21st, associated with cloudbands, a cut-off low, and a strong cold front. As a result, Useless Loop on the Gascoyne coast and Munglinup in the Southeast Coastal district recorded their highest June daily rainfall on record, whilst a few sites in the Gascoyne and Southeast Coastal had their wettest June for at least 20 years. In contrast, a number of sites in western parts of the SWLD had their driest June on record, or their driest June for at least 20 years.

Mean maximum temperatures were above to very much above average across the whole State in June, with sites in most WA districts observing their warmest June days on record. Averaged across the State, the mean maximum temperature was over two degrees Celsius above the long-term average, and ranked as the warmest June since comparable records commenced in 1910. Similarly it was over two degrees Celsius warmer than normal averaged across the Lower Southwest, and was also its warmest June on record. An approaching cold front directed warm northwesterly winds over the SWLD on the 5th and resulted in many sites across the region registering their highest June temperature on record.

Mean minimum temperatures were above to very much above average across most of WA in June, with Warburton in the Southern Interior recording its warmest June nights on record. A number of sites had their highest June minimum temperature on record during the month, with unusually warm nights early in the month in the Lower West and South West, and from the 18th to 21st through much of the State.

When averaged across WA, the mean temperature was about 1.5 degrees Celsius above the long-term average, and ranked the third warmest June on record. Numerous sites observed their highest June mean temperature on record or highest June mean temperature for at least 20 years.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 July 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
