Western Australia in September 2015: Fourth driest September

WA saw its fourth driest September when averaged across the State as a whole, with very much below average rainfall also reported in the southwest. The state-wide mean maximum temperatures was the eighth highest in September on record, whilst mean minimum temperatures were near average.

  • Fourth driest September for WA; seventh driest for the South West Land Division
  • Eighth highest mean maximum temperature for WA; third highest for southwest WA
  • Near average mean minimum temperature for WA; below average for southwest WA

Below to very-much-below average rainfall was reported through large parts of WA in September, particularly in central and southwest regions. For WA as a whole, September 2015  was the fourth driest September on record, and the driest September for 76 years, since 1939. For the South West Land Division (SWLD) as a whole, it was the seventh driest September on record, and the driest for five years, since 2010. A few sites in the northeast SWLD and neighbouring Gascoyne and Goldfields recorded their lowest total September rainfall on record, whilst many sites, particularly in the SWLD, recorded their lowest September rainfall for at least 20 years. Rainfall was mainly recorded in the early part of month and was mostly confined to southern parts of the State as a result of the passage of cold fronts.

Mean maximum temperatures were above to very much above average in western and northern WA in September 2015, with the remainder of the State near average. For WA as a whole, the mean maximum temperature was eighth highest since comparable records commenced in 1910. Last year (2014) WA recorded its warmest September on record. When averaged across the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay), September was the third warmest September on record, and the warmest September for 28 years since 1987. Many sites in the west Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne, and western parts of the SWLD experienced their warmest September on record. Southerly winds in the wake of a cold front resulted in a cold day with daily maxima in the low teens in southern parts of the SWLD on the 1st, and Newdegate Research Station recorded its equal lowest maximum temperature in its 20 years of record. Western parts of the State saw very warm to hot days on the 9th, 23rd and 24th, with daily maxima in the low to mid-thirties in the Lower West and Central West grading to the high-thirties in the Gascoyne. A few sites broke their highest September temperature on record, including Carnarvon Airport, which recorded a maximum of 38.8 °C, its highest September maximum in 70 years of record, and the highest September temperature registered in the town since the record of 38.9 °C was set at the Post Office on 24 September 1936. A very hot day with a daily maximum temperature of 40.5 °C and 40.2 °C was reported at West Roebuck and Derby Aerodrome in the west Kimberley on the 17th respectively, which was the first occurrence of a 40 °C day this spring in WA and the country. Daily maxima in low forties were again observed in the Kimberley and Pilbara coast on the last day of September, and 40.0 °C at Onslow Airport was its first ever 40 °C day in September in its 50 years of temperature recording.

Mean minimum temperatures were above to very much above average in much of the Pilbara, Gascoyne, and Eucla in September. Below average mean minimum temperatures were confined to the Kimberley and parts of southwest WA and the southern Goldfields. When averaged across the State, the mean minimum temperature was near average, but was below average in the Lower Southwest region. Western parts of the SWLD experienced unseasonally warm nights on the 10th and 24th, with daily minima in the mid-to-high teens, and a number of sites recorded their warmest September night on record, including Cape Leeuwin and Donnybrook with over 100 years of temperature recording.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 October 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
