Tuesday, 1 December 2015 - Monthly Climate Summary for Western Australia - Product code IDCKGC11R0
Western Australia in November 2015: Equal warmest nights on record
For WA as a whole, November 2015 comprised the fourth warmest days and the equal warmest nights in November on record. Rainfall was higher than normal when averaged across WA, though it was near average for the South West Land Division (SWLD) as a whole.
- Mean maximum temperature: fourth highest for WA; fourth highest for SWLD
- Mean minimum temperature: equal highest for WA; highest for SWLD
- Rainfall: above average for WA; near average for SWLD
Above to very much above average rainfall was reported over much of WA, apart from small areas of WA including in the southwest corner, far north Kimberley, and eastern Pilbara and western Northern Interior. Several sites in the Central West and Central Wheat Belt observed their wettest November on record, which was largely due to moderate to heavy falls, including some record high daily rainfall, on the 6th and 7th, when a complex low with embedded thunderstorms moved through southwest WA. Spring Valley, north of Kellerberrin in the Central Wheat Belt recorded 123.4 mm on the 7th, which its highest daily fall in 56 years of record, and the third highest daily fall on record in November for the SWLD. Areas of below to very-much-below average rainfall were recorded in southwest WA, with sites in the South West and South Coastal districts recording their driest November for at least 40 years. For WA as a whole, rainfall in November 2015 was above average. It was near average when averaged across the SWLD, though it was below average for its southwestern corner.
Mean maximum temperatures in November 2015 were above to very much above average across most of WA and a few sites in the SWLD experienced their warmest November on record. For WA as a whole, the mean maximum temperature ranked as the fourth highest in November since comparable records commenced in 1910, whilst the SWLD also ranked as the fourth warmest November on record. Temperatures were frequently in the low to mid-forties in central and northern WA, particularly in the mid-to-latter part of November, and Kununurra Aerodrome in the east Kimberley recorded a run of fourteen consecutive days (16th to 29th) with temperatures at or above 40 °C, which exceeded the previous November record at the site of nine consecutive days in 1986, 1994, and 2009. It was also its second longest run of days at or above 40 °C for any month since records commenced in 1986, only behind 16 days in December 2004. At the mid-November, a few sites in the Gascoyne and Goldfields recorded their highest November temperature on record, and a bushfire occurred in the Esperance area in very hot, dry and windy conditions, as a trough moved eastward through central and southern WA.
Mean minimum temperatures in November 2015 were above to very much above average for most of WA, apart from areas of the Kimberley and near the northern WA/NT border, which generally saw near average mean minimum temperatures. Many sites had their highest November mean minimum temperature on record. When averaged across the State, the mean minimum temperature was the equal highest in November since comparable temperature records commenced in 1910, equal with 2006. When averaged across the SWLD, it was the highest mean minimum temperature in November on record. Overnight temperatures were frequently in the mid-to-high twenties and even into the low thirties in the Pilbara and Gascoyne in the middle to latter part of November, with many sites recording their warmest November night on record. Port Hedland Airport recorded eight consecutive days (21st to 28th) with minimum temperatures at or above 25 °C, which doubled the previous November record of four consecutive days recorded in 1973, twice in 2006, and 2014.

Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992. |

Notes
The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 December 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site
(which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at
Perth Regional Office (009034),
which ran from 1876 to early 1992.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
