Western Australia in August 2016: Wet with warm days in the north; cold in the southwest

Rainfall in August 2016 was above average for Western Australia and the wettest August for eleven years. State-wide average maximum and minimum temperatures were both close to normal.

Wet in the north, near average in the southwest

  • Rainfall for WA in August was approximately 27% above normal and the wettest for 11 years, since 2005
  • A Northwest Cloudband brought unseasonal rainfall to the north from the 28th to 31st, with record high August daily rainfall reported at a number of Kimberley sites
  • A few sites in the Kimberley had their wettest August on record as a result of the cloudband late in the month
  • An intense low and a strong cold front brought moderate to heavy rainfall to the south coast of the South West Land Division (SWLD) from the 27th to 30th, with a number of August daily rainfall records recorded in the South East Coastal
  • A number of sites in the South West Land Division recorded their wettest August in at least 20 years

Cooler than normal days and nights in the southwest

  • The mean maximum temperature for WA was near average, but the lowest for 6 years, since 2010
  • The mean maximum temperature for the SWLD was below average and the lowest for 12 years, since 2004
  • Many SWLD locations either had their coldest August days on record or their coldest August days for at least 24 years
  • Rainfall and southerly winds brought a cold day to parts of the Goldfields and South East Coastal on the 22nd and 23rd; Laverton Aerodrome recorded its lowest August maximum temperature on record on the 22nd
  • The mean minimum temperature for WA was close to normal, as was the mean minimum for the SWLD, though it was the coldest August in the SWLD for six years, since 2010
  • Southerly winds brought cold air to southern WA in early and late August with resulting sub-zero temperatures reported, along with a number of record low August temperatures

Note: Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 September 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
