Monday, 3 October 2016 - Monthly Climate Summary for Western Australia - Product code IDCKGC11R0
Western Australia in September 2016: Unusually cold in the south, hot in the far north
September 2016 rainfall was generally near average to below average across much of the State, but above average in parts of the Kimberley. Most of WA recorded cooler than normal daytime and overnight temperatures, apart from the far north of the State, and both mean maximum and minimum temperatures for the whole State were below average as a result. The South West Land Division (SWLD) in particular recorded unusually low temperatures and the mean minimum temperature for the month was the lowest in September on record.
Below average to near average rainfall for most of WA; above average rainfall in parts of the Kimberley
- WA September rainfall was near average
- Kununurra Aero (north Kimberley) had its wettest September on record, and a number of other Kimberley sites had their wettest September in more than 30 years as a result of thunderstorms and cloudbands
Cooler days and nights for most WA; hot in the far north
- The mean maximum temperature for WA was about 0.5 °C below average and the coolest September for six years, since 2010
- The SWLD mean maximum temperature was about 1.4 °C below average, the equal tenth-coolest September on record
- The mean minimum temperature for WA was about 0.7 °C below average and the lowest for five years, since 2011
- The SWLD mean minimum temperature was about 2.1 °C below average and the lowest in September on record
- Unusually hot conditions in the Kimberley set several daily and monthly temperatures records
- Wyndham Aerodrome (Kimberley) recorded Australia's highest mean maximum temperature on record in September (39.2 °C), including ten days with daily maxima of 40 °C or higher, which is also a national record for the number of such days in September
- Other extremes in the Kimberley including hottest September day at Argyle Aerodrome on the 27th, record high September mean maximum temperature at Warmun, and highest September mean maximum since 1992 at Doongan
- A daily minimum temperature of 30.0 °C at Warmun on the 30th was a national record for the highest minimum temperature in September; a few other sites in the Kimberley also had their warmest September night on record
- Broome Airport and other Kimberley sites recorded their highest September mean minimum temperature on record; only old Broome Post Office site's mean minimum temperature of 21.4 °C in September 1910 was higher than the Broome Airport's new record
- In contrast to the north, a number of sites in southwest WA had their lowest September mean maximum temperature on record, and many sites in the southern half of WA had their coldest September since 1992
- Several sites across southern WA recorded their coldest September night on record during the month, whilst numerous sites in western and southern WA registered their lowest September mean minimun temperature on record
- A high number of very cold nights were observed in the SWLD during the month; Cunderdin Airfield (Central Wheat Belt) recorded eight times with minimum temperatures 0 °C or lower, which was its highest number of such nights in September in 67 years of record
Frost in the South West Land Division (SWLD)
- Freezing temperatures caused significant frost damage to crops in parts of the SWLD in mid-to-late September

Notes
The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 3 October 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site
(which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at
Perth Regional Office (009034),
which ran from 1876 to early 1992.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
