Wednesday, 1 February 2017 - Monthly Climate Summary for Western Australia - Product code IDCKGC11R0
Western Australia in January 2017: Wet overall, cool days in the north and east
January 2017 was the third-wettest for Western Australia; the wettest January since 2006. Throughout the month, tropical low pressure systems with embedded thunderstorms brought persistent and locally heavy rainfall to northern and inland WA. Across the south, a cloudband towards the end of the month contributed significantly to above average rainfall totals near the west coast and in the northern half of the South West Land Division. Daytime temperatures were below average in the north and east, with below average night-time temperatures in the southwest of the State.
Above average rainfall across most of Western Australia
- January rainfall across WA was 129% above average, the third highest January rainfall, behind 1942 and the record set in 2006
- Most of the State recorded above average rainfall, although parts of the southern South West Land Division recorded below average rainfall
- Highest on record monthly rainfall occurred across the east Kimberley, and parts of the Northern and Southern Interior, east Pilbara and northern Goldfields
- Record high monthly rainfall totals were also recorded in the southwest Gascoyne, Central West, and Central Wheat Belt as a result of a significant cloudband late in the month
- Several sites in the east Kimberley recorded their highest January daily rainfall on record on the 4th as a tropical low moved through the region, whilst significant thunderstorm activity brought record high daily totals to the northern Goldfields on the 17th, and east Pilbara on the 19th, and another tropical low brought further record high daily totals to parts of the east Kimberley on the 24th and 25th
- A number of sites across the southwest Gascoyne and northern South West Land Division registered record high daily rainfall totals between the 29th and 31st as a result of the cloudband in the region
- Throughout the month, minor flooding occurred in the Kimberley District and along the Fitzroy, Ord and De Grey Rivers, across the Interior Districts, and along the Irwin River in the Central West
Cool days over the north and east, cool nights in the southwest
- Below average daytime temperatures were recorded across most of the north and east, with 42% of Western Australia recording temperatures in the lowest decile (the bottom 10% of records)
- Above average daytime temperatures were recorded across parts of the southwest
- Averaged across WA as a whole, maximum temperatures were below average and the lowest for five years, since 2012
- Telfer Aero recorded its lowest January mean daily maximum temperature on record
- A number of sites in the Lower West and adjacent parts recorded their coldest January day on record on the 30th as a result of a persistent cloudband and rainfall over the region
- Night-time temperatures were below average in the eastern Pilbara and adjoining parts of the Interior districts as well as across the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line between Jurien Bay and Bremer Bay), which recorded its coolest January since 1969
- Minima were above average throughout eastern parts of southern Western Australia, through inland parts to the northwest coast and in the northern Kimberley
- A few sites in southern WA recorded their lowest January temperature on record, with Warmun in the north equalling its record
- Rocky Gully and York recorded their lowest January mean daily minimum temperature on record, and few sites in the southwest recorded their coolest January in at least 20 years.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Wednesday 1 February 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site
(which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at
Perth Regional Office (009034),
which ran from 1876 to early 1992.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
