Wednesday, 1 March 2017 - Monthly Climate Summary for Western Australia - Product code IDCKGC11R0
Western Australia in February 2017: Wet with mild daytime temperatures
Rainfall in February was above average for most of Western Australia, particularly in the western parts of the State, with record high totals in parts of southwest WA. The state-wide averaged rainfall was about 70% higher than the long-term average. For the South West Land Division (SWLD), it was the second wettest February on record, and the wettest February for 62 years, since 1955. Mean maximum temperatures were below average for most of WA, while mean minimum temperatures were mostly near average.
Above average rainfall for most of WA; second-wettest February for the SWLD
- Rainfall averaged across WA was just over 100 mm, about seventy percent higher than the long-term average
- The SWLD recorded its second-wettest February on record, and the wettest February for 62 years, since 1955
- Many record high February daily rainfalls were recorded between 8 and 11 February as a tropical low moved over the Pilbara and an associated cloudband developed over southwest WA
- Over fifty locations in the SWLD observed their wettest February on record, while more than an hundred sites reported their wettest February on record for at least 20 years
Below average mean maximum temperatures for most of WA
- The mean maximum temperature for WA was 1.3 °C below average, the lowest for six years since February 2011
- The mean maximum temperature for the SWLD was 1.6 °C below average, the lowest for sixteen years since February 2001
- Persistent rain and cool southeasterly winds led to many locations in the SWLD observing their lowest February daily maximum temperature on record between the 8th and 10th
- Several sites in the SWLD had their mildest February on record, while a dozen or so had their mildest February for at least 20 years
- Mean minimum temperatures were close to average across much of WA
Heavy rainfall and flooding
- A tropical low formed to the north of Western Australia early in February, and a cloudband associated with this tropical low developed over southwest Western Australia and brought widespread rainfall and many record high February daily rainfalls between 8 and 11 February. Flooding was reported across large parts of southwest WA as a result, with major flooding reported in the Avon catchment, and minor flooding in the Swan downstream from the Avon, as well as major flooding in the Esperance Coast Basin and Blackwood River catchment (see Special Climate Statement 60 for more details)

Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992. |

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 March 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site
(which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at
Perth Regional Office (009034),
which ran from 1876 to early 1992.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
