Western Australia in January 2018: A wet January

Rainfall in January 2018 was above average across most of Western Australia as tropical cyclone Joyce and a slow-moving tropical low produced widespread significant rains. It was the fifth-wettest January on record for the State as a whole. The mean maximum temperature was near average but mean minimum temperature was above average when averaged across WA.

Above average rainfall for most of WA

  • Rainfall in January 2018 for WA was about 110% above the January average and the fifth-wettest January since comparable records commenced in 1900
  • Rainfall for the South West Land Division (SWLD) was more than twice the January average
  • Tropical cyclone Joyce, or its remnant low pressure system, and an associated cloudband produced widespread significant rainfall in the north and west of the State in early to mid-January; many record high January daily rainfall totals were recorded near the west coast, particularly around Perth on the 15th and 16th
  • A tropical low moved slowly over land through the Kimberley and Northern Interior at the end of January producing very heavy rainfall, including a few January daily rainfall records
  • West Roebuck recorded 448.8 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 30th, which was its highest daily rainfall for any month in its 17 years of record, and the highest daily rainfall in WA for almost 14 years, since 525.5 mm was recorded at Nifty Copper Mine in the Pilbara on 28 March 2004
  • Broome Airport recorded a daily rainfall of 412.2 mm from its automatic rainguage (though its manual rainguage had a higher total at 439.4 mm ) on the 30th, which was its 2nd-highest daily rainfall for any month on record; the record being 476.6 mm on 30 January 1997 also the result of a slow-moving tropical low
  • Many sites in the west Kimberley, east Pilbara, Lower West and adjacent parts of neighbouring districts recorded their wettest January on record or wettest January for at least 20 years

Very much above average overnight temperatures in southeast WA

  • Mean maximum temperature for WA was close to average; the warmest since 2015
  • Mean minimum temperature for WA was 0.43 °C above average; the warmest since 2016
  • A broad area in the north and central WA experienced cold conditions with daily maxima more than 10 °C lower than average at the end of January; several sites in the Pilbara, Southern Interior and northern Goldfields broke both January low maxima and minima records
  • Mean minimum temperatures in the north and west Kimberley were 1 °C to 2 °C cooler than averages; a number of sites had their coolest January nights on record
  • In contrast, the southeast of the State recorded above average mean minimum temperatures; Eyre equalled its previous January record

Record wind gust at Derby Aerodrome in the west Kimberley

  • Derby Aerodrome recorded a wind gust of 169 km/h (91 knots) in the evening on the 7th during a severe thunderstorm, which was its highest wind gust in 22 years of recording. The previous record at the site was 124 km/h (67 knots) on 9 February 1977

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 February 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
