Western Australia in February 2018: A wet month with below average daytime temperatures

February 2018 was particularly wet in the west Kimberley and southeast of Western Australia, with little rainfall recorded near the west coast. For the State as a whole, rainfall was above average, whilst the WA mean maximum temperature was below average and the WA mean minimum temperature was near average.

Above average rainfall for WA

  • Monthly rainfall was above average for WA, but lower than February 2017 as it ranked eighth-wettest February on record
  • The South West Land Division also recorded above average rainfall
  • Tropical cyclone Kelvin produced very heavy fall in the west Kimberley in mid-February; a daily rainfall of 376.8 mm at Broome Airport on the 17th is not only its February record, but also highest February daily rainfall in WA for 23 years since 10 February 1995 when 415.8 mm was recorded at Balmoral in the Pilbara
  • Thunderstorms produced isolated moderate to heavy rainfall in inland WA on the 11th, and the South West Land Division on the 25th and 26th, resulting in a few February daily rainfall records
  • A record high February rainfall at Broome Airport followed a record wet January; the two-month rainfall total (1559.4 mm) exceeded the previous annual rainfall record (1496.6 mm set in 2000)
  • Mount Elizabeth on the Kimberley Plateau also had its wettest February on record while a few sites in the west Kimberley, Gascoyne, eastern South West Land Division, and Eucla had either their wettest February on record or wettest February rainfall in over 20 years

Mean maximum temperatures below average for much of WA

  • Mean maximum temperature was 1.15 °C below average for WA
  • Mean minimum temperature was 0.19 °C below average for WA
  • Mean maximum temperatures were 2 °C to 3 °C below average along the west coast and west Pilbara coast, and 2 °C to 4 °C below average in large parts of northern and eastern WA; several sites near the west coast and in the west Kimberley had their mildest February on record or mildest February for at least 20 years in terms of maximum temperatures
  • The passage of tropical low 11U resulted in daytime and overnight temperatures well below average in northern and central WA on 1 February; Telfer and Newman in the Pilbara had record low minimum temperatures, and Laverton and Leinster in the Goldfields had record low maximum temperatures
  • Tropical cyclone Kelvin brought cloud and heavy rain to the west Kimberley in mid-February, and Broome Airport, Derby Aerodrome, and Curtin Aerodrome registered their coolest day in February on record on the 16th as a result

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 March 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
