Warmer than average conditions were observed throughout much of Western Australia during April 2018, with daytime temperatures ranking as second-highest on record. A number of sites in the Kimberley and Pilbara recorded their warmest April on record, while sites in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Goldfields and Eucla broke their highest April daily temperature records. Rainfall was below average through much of the Southwest Land Division (SWLD).

Second-warmest April on record

  • Above to very much above average daytime temperatures were reported throughout much of Western Australia during April 2018, apart from in the southwest which saw near average conditions.
  • Average across the state as a whole, mean daily maximum temperatures were 2.99 °C above average and ranked as the second-highest on record behind April 1981.
  • Numerous sites in the Pilbara and Kimberley reported their highest April mean daily maximum temperature on record
  • Conditions were particularly hot during the first week of the month in the Pilbara and Kimberley where temperatures reached the low forties and several sites broke their highest April temperature on record
  • The heat extended into the southeast of the state, with temperatures exceeding 40 °C in the Eucla District on the 9th; Forrest and Eucla observed their highest April temperature on record
  • The 42.0 °C reported at Eucla on the 9th was its highest April temperature in 100 years of record
  • Further information on this heat event is available in the Special Climate Statement 65 - persistent summer-like heat sets many April records
  • Minimum temperatures were above to very much above average through the Pilbara, north and east Gascoyne, Goldfields, Southern Interior, Eucla and in southern parts of the SWLD; below average minimum temperatures were confined to patches in the Kimberley and coastal Gascoyne while the remainder of the state was near average.
  • Averaged across the state as a whole, the mean daily minimum temperature was 1.18 °C above average and ranked as the ninth-highest on record.
  • High overnight temperaters were recorded in the Pilbara in the first two weeks of April and some sites had their warmest April night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record
  • A few Pilbara sites recorded had their highest April mean daily minimum temperature on record

Below average rainfall in the southwest

  • Rainfall was below average through much of the SWLD and isolated areas of the remainder of the State with some sites in the Pilbara, Central West, South and Southeast Coastal districts observing their lowest total April rainfall in more than 20 years
  • Morawa Airport recorded no rainfall for the month, its lowest April total rainfall in 22 years of record
  • Patches of above average rainfall were observed in parts of the Kimberley and east Pilbara, with the remainder of the state generally near average or below
  • Averaged across the state, rainfall was 63% below average and the lowest since 1994
  • A moderate cold front moved across the SWLD on the 22nd, bringing the first significant rain of the season, with totals of 20 mm to 40 mm reported the Southwest District.
  • Thunderstorms associated with the front on the 22nd caused power outages for up to 7000 properties with the most affected areas Kelmscott, Woodvale, Kingsley and Sawyers Valley.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 May 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
