Western Australia in July 2018: warmer daytime temperatures across Western Australia
Mean maximum temperatures were above average across Western Australia. For WA as a whole, mean maximum temperature in July 2018 was the second-highest on record, just behind last July. Mean minimum temperatures were above average in the south, but below average in the northeast. The state-wide averaged mean minimum temperature was above average. Rainfall was mostly near average in the western WA, including the South West Land Division, but the central and eastern parts of the State recorded below average rainfall while it is a seasonal dry month in the Kimberley.
Below average rainfall for much of the central and eastern WA
- Monthly rainfall was below average for WA as a whole, but wetter than last July
- Rainfall was near average for most of the Gascoyne district and the South West Land Division (SWLD) largely due to passages of cold fronts at the start of July and from the mid-to end of the month
- It was the wettest July since 2011 for the SWLD as a whole; a number of sites recorded their wettest July for at least 20 years
- It is a wet start to July for the western WA as a cloudband, two fronts and a low pressure system produced a series of rains; some sites in the Central West, Central Wheat Belt districts had their record July daily rainfall between 30 mm and 70 mm on the 3rd
- A cloudband and three cold fronts in succession brought moderate to heavy rainfall to far southwest of the State between the 21st and 23rd; Windy Harbour in the South West district recorded its wettest July day in 34 years of record with 61.4 mm on the 21st
Above average mean maximum temperature across WA
- The statewide averaged mean maximum temperature was 2.30 °C above average and the second-highest in July on record, just behind last July (2.32 °C)
- Despite the absence of very warm daytime temperatures, several sites in the State's south, inland east and northern Goldfields had their warmest July on record or warmest since 1994
- A pool of cold southwesterly air resulted in daytime temperatures in the low 10s near the State's south coast on the 5th, with Esperance Aerodrome recording the lowest maximum temperature at 10.2 °C
- The statewide averaged mean minimum temperature was 0.47 °C above average and warmer than last July
- The mean minimum temperature for the SWLD as a whole was 1.19 °C above average, which was the tenth-highest in July on record, and highest since 2007
- Cape Leeuwin had its mildest July on record while Esperance had its mildest July since 1996, in terms of minimum temperature
- Zero to sub-zero temperatures were mostly recorded between the 6th and 12th in southern WA, and notable frosty mornings were the 6th in the Goldfields district, and 10th and 11th in the South West district

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Wednesday 1 August 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
