Western Australia in January 2019: warmest January on record; a dry month

The mean maximum temperature for Western Australia was the highest on record for January, while the mean minimum temperature ranked the equal fifth-highest in January on record . Rainfall was below average for many areas, making it the driest January since 2005 when averaged across the State.

Below average rainfall for much of western and southern WA

  • For Western Australia as a whole, rainfall was 41% below average and the driest January since 2005
  • Little or no rainfall was recorded in the west Pillara, Gascoyne and most of the southern half of the State; with several sites near the southern coasts and the Goldfields had their driest January for at least 20 years
  • A late start to the northern wet season saw inland Kimberley received below average rainfall; a number of sites had their driest January since 1998
  • A tropical low, which later developed into Tropical Cyclone Riley, produced isolated very heavy rainfall to the northwest Kimberley coast including 132.0 mm at Troughton Island on the 23rd
  • An unseasonal cut-off low pressure system produced moderate to heavy daily rainfall in the far southwest on the 23rd, with Cape Leeuwin and Witchcliffe having their highest January daily rainfall on record

Warmer than average temperatures across WA away from the west coast and far north

  • For WA, the mean maximum temperature was 2.33 °C above average, the highest in January on record
  • For WA, the mean minimum temperature was 0.86 °C above average, the equal fifth-highest in January on record
  • For WA, the mean temperature (average of maximum and minimum temperature) was 1.58 °C above average, the second-highest on record and highest since 2008
  • Dry and hot conditions in the north saw many inland Pilbara sites having long runs of consecutive days with temperature over 40 °C from the mid-December till late January, while several locations in the Kimberley recorded their highest January temperature on record in early January before the offshore Tropical Cyclone Riley brought cooler conditions
  • Daily maximum temperature reached the high 40s in the State's southeast in early and late January, including a January record of 48.6 °C on the 23rd at Eucla with 100 years of records; 49.1 °C at Red Rock Point on the 23rd, and at Marble Bar on the 13th was the highest temperature of the month for WA
  • Further information about the heatwaves that have affected large areas of the country can be found in the Special Climate Statement 68-Widespread heatwaves during December 2018 and January 2019
  • Hot daytime temperatures followed by cloudy conditions had a number of sites in inland Pilbara and Gascoyne recording daily minima over 33 °C in the first half of the month; Meekatharra Airport's 33.0 °C on the 15th was its all-time highest daily minimum temperature on record
  • In terms of mean maximum temperature, several sites in the State's southeastern quarter had their warmest January on record or warmest for at least 20 years; Giles Meteorological Office's mean 40.6 °C was also its all-time highest on record
  • In terms of mean minimum temperature, several sites in the inland Pilbara and the State's southeast had their warmest January on record; Telfer's mean 28.4°C was not only its January record, but was also its second-highest for any month
  • Surrounded by cooler than average sea surface temperatures, and rare occurrences of late seabreeze onset, a number of sites near the west coast either had their coolest January on record or coolest for at least 20 years for either daytime or overnight temperatures

Tropical cyclone Riley

  • A tropical low was first identified on the 22nd to the north of the Kimberley, and was later named Tropical Cyclone Riley early on the 24th when located to the northwest of Broome. Riley remained offshore during its life span and had minimal impacts on the northwest coastal communities except isolated very heavy falls along the northwest Kimberley coast on the 23rd

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 February 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
