Western Australia in April 2019: above average temperatures

Rainfall in April 2019 was mixed, with above average rainfall in the far western Pilbara and inland Gascoyne, and near average to below average rainfall for the reminder of Western Australia. Mean maximum temperatures were mostly above average except for the State's southwest. Mean minimum temperatures were mostly above average with below average mean minima in the far southwest corner. Both mean maximum and minimum temperatures were above average for the State as a whole.

Above average rainfall in the northwest

  • Monthly rainfall was mixed: above average rainfall in the far western Pilbara and inland Gascoyne, near average or below average rainfall for the reminder
  • Rainfall was 14 % below April average for WA as a whole, though it was wettest than April 2018
  • It was a dry 'wet season' (October 2018-April 2019) for much of the Kimberley and Pilbara districts; three tropical cyclones formed in the WA region late in the season with tropical cyclones Savannah and Veronica developed in March, followed by Wallace in April,  and only Veronica tracked close to the coast and  brought significant falls along the Pilbara coastal areas
  • A monsoon trough with embedded tropical cyclone Wallace and a tropical low produced moderate rainfall to the Kimberley and Pilbara coasts in the first half of April; Kito Station had its wettest April day on the 13th
  • A cloudband followed by a cold front produced moderate rainfall and localised heavy falls over inland western and southern WA between the 12th and 15th; a number of sites in the Gascoyne and southern Pilbara broke their April daily rainfall records and several sites had their wettest April for more than 20 years as a result
  • The first strong cold front of the season produced moderate rainfall and small hail to the State's southwest on the 19th and 20th; Bluff Knoll in the Stirling Ranges reported snow on the 19th, which was one of its earliest dates for snow fall (the earliest sighted date was 20 April 1970)

Above average daytime temperatures

  • The mean maximum temperature for WA was 1.58 °C above average, which was the thirteenth-highest on record for April
  • The mean minimum temperature for WA was 1.01 °C above average, which was the fifteenth-highest on record for April
  • It was a very hot 'wet season', and maximum and minimum temperatures were very much above average across most of the Kimberley and Pilbara districts
  • A number of late season heatwave events occurred early in the month in the northwestern and southern WA; several sites in the Eucla, Gascoyne, the South West Land Division (SWLD) and Goldfields had their highest April temperature on record , and it was the first occurrence with temperature over 40 °C in April for Eyre (41.5 °C on the 4th) and Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport (40.1 °C on the 11th)
  • A strong cold front followed by an airmass from deep south led to wet and cold conditions in the southern WA between the 19th and 21st, with many new records set for coldest April day and coldest April night
  • A daily maximum temperature of 9.4 °C on the 19th at Rocky Gully (South Coastal district) was also the State's new record for lowest April maximum temperature; previous record was 10.0 °C (at Manjimup on 20 April 1970 and at Mount Barker on 12 April 1955)
  • Record warm nights were on the 1st in the SWLD with daily minima in the low 20s, also on the 10th and 11th in inland Gascoyne and Goldfields with daily minima in the mid-to-high 20s
  • A number of sites in the Kimberley experienced very warm nights with daily minims in the high 20s between the 5th and 10th, which was their new April record; a minimum of 30.0 °C at Halls Creek Airport's on the 9th was Halls Creek town's highest April minimum temperature on record (previous record was 28.7 °C on 14 April 1961 at Halls Creek MO), and it is also the national highest minimum of the month

Tropical cyclone Wallace

  • Tropical cyclone Wallace, the third cyclone of the season in the northwest WA region, developed off the north Kimberley coast on the 6th. Wallace maintained a steady southwesterly track off the northwest coast and briefly intensified to category 3 system before downgrading to a low on the 10th

Severe wind gusts in the south

  • A thunderstorm produced a wind gust of 94 km/h at Norseman Aero on the 11th
  • A strong cold front and an airmass from deep south produced severe coastal wind gusts and small hail in the SWLD between the 19th and 21st. A house roof was blown off at Alkimos (a northern suburb of Perth), and small hail was reported in Perth and Albany. Snow fell on Bluff Knoll on the 19th. The State's Fire and Emergency Services responded more than 60 calls for assistance in the western and southern SWLD.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 May 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
