Western Australia in September 2019: Dry and record warm days

Rainfall in September 2019 was below average in the southern two-thirds of Western Australia. It was the fifth-driest September on record for WA. Mean maximum temperatures were above average for most of the State except for the far northeast and record warm over much of the south. It was the State's warmest September on record for daytime temperatures since records commenced in 1910. Mean minimum temperatures were above average for much of WA, but were below average in the Kimberley and southern coast areas west of Eucla.

For the first nine months of 2019, rainfall was the third-lowest rainfall on record, lowest since 1936 for Western Australia. It was also the State's warmest year-to-date on record in terms of mean maximum temperatures.

Dry across southern two-third of WA

  • September rainfall was 68% below average for WA as whole, the fifth-driest September on record
  • Western Australia's year-to-date rainfall was 47% below average, which was the third-lowest rainfall on record, and lowest since 1936
  • For the South West Land Division (SWLD), September rainfall was the fifth-driest September on record, while year-to-date rainfall was the fourth-driest year-to-date on record
  • Several sites in the SWLD and southern Goldfields wither had their driest September on record, or driest September for at least 20 years

Above average daytime and overnight temperatures for much of WA

  • Western Australia's mean maximum temperature was 2.81 °C above average, the warmest September on record
  • Western Australia's year-to-date mean maximum temperature was 2.13 °C above average, the warmest year-to-date on record and more than 0.6 °C higher than the previous record (+1.45 °C in 2005)
  • Hot days with temperatures well into the mid-30s were recorded in the SWLD on the 9th, 10th and 30th, including several September temperature records
  • Very hot days with temperatures over 40 °C were recorded in the Kimberley and Pilbara at the end of September; Fitzroy Crossing Aero in the west Kimberley recorded 41.7 °C on the 30th, the highest September temperatures for three years for WA since 41.8  °C at Wyndham Aero on 26 September 2016
  • For the SWLD as a whole, the mean maximum temperature in September 2019 was 3.45 °C above average, the second-warmest September on record, behind 1914 (3.63 °C)
  • Many sites in the SWLD including Perth Metro, in southern Goldfields including Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport, and in the Gascoyne district had their warmest September on record in terms of maximum temperatures
  • Light winds and clear night skies resulted in cold nights in the SWLD in early September between 5th and 8th; frost damage occurred in the Southeast Coastal district as temperatures dipped to below 2 °C
  • Cloudy conditions and northerly winds resulted in warm nights with minimum temperatures in the mid-10s in the State's southwest on the 12th, 14th and 30th, a number of sites had their warmest September night on record
  • Mean minimum temperatures were below average in the Kimberley; Broome Airport had its coolest September since 1994

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 October 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
