Western Australia in November 2019: record high daytime temperature and third driest November
November 2019 was the third-driest November on record, and the hottest November in terms of daytime temperatures for Western Australia. Rainfall was below average for most of the State, and the Goldfields and eastern Gascoyne regions were particularly dry. It was State's third-driest November on record and driest since 1960. Almost the whole State saw above to very much above average daytime temperatures, and it was the hottest November on record for the State. Overnight temperatures were above average in the western and central WA excluding the southern coastal parts and the State's northeastern quarter.
Dry across most of WA
- For Western Australia, rainfall was 71% below the long-term mean November rainfall, the third-driest November on record since comparable records commenced in 1900, and driest since 1960
- Apart from coastal parts of the South West Land Division (SWLD) and parts of the Kimberley, most of State received little or no rain, some sites in the Kimberley, Goldfields, Gascoyne and Eucla had their driest November on record or driest November for at least 20 years
- Rainfall for the year so far was below to very much below average for most of the State, and a small area around Port Hedland in the Pilbara had above average rainfall due to a very wet March; the year to date rainfall was the second-driest 11-month (January-November) on record, and driest since 1936 for WA
Above average daytime temperatures for most of WA
- The mean maximum temperature was 3.0 °C above average for WA, which was the hottest November on record, and exceeding previous record (2.54 °C in November 2006) by a relatively large margin
- The mean minimum temperature was 0.62 °C above average for WA
- Three noticeable extremes heat events occurred in various regions during November with numerous November temperature records set
- The first heat event occurred along the west coast on the 8th and 9th; Cape Naturaliste, Denham and Jandakot Aero's new record was also early season temperature record for these sites
- The second heat event was widespread and persistent at mid-November, temperatures first built up in the north and along the west coast from the 13th then intensified and extended inland over the Gascoyne, SWLD, Goldfields and Eucla until the 19th; temperatures at some inland Gascoyne and Goldfields sites had exceeded their previous November record trice in a row during the event
- A daily maximum temperature of 47.1 °C at Mandora (far southwest Kimberley) on the 16th was not only its November record, but also the eighth-highest November temperature on record and highest since 1990 (Curtin Aero recorded 47.3 °C on 18 November 1990) for Western Australia
- The third heat event occurred in the Kimberley in late November on the 22nd and 23rd; Broome Airport broke its 81 years of record with 44.6 °C on the 23rd
- Many sites in the north, Gascoyne and SWLD had their hottest November on record or hottest November since 1990
- Mean maximum temperatures and mean temperatures for the year for far were above to very much above average across the whole State; the year to date mean maximum and mean temperature were the warmest 11-month (January-November) on record for WA
- Mean minimum temperatures for the year so far were above to very much above average for much of WA except the northeast and southwest

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 December 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
