Western Australia in December 2019: record hot December

It was the warmest December on record, and driest December for twenty-seven years for Western Australia. Almost the entire State saw mean maximum temperatures being highest on record. The state-wide averaged mean temperature and maximum temperature topped previous respective records by a large margin. Rainfall was below average along most of the west and south coasts, and the eastern parts of the State.

Dry along the west and south coasts, and eastern parts

  • December rainfall was 51% below average and it was the driest December for twenty-seven years since 1992 for WA
  • It was the driest December for ten years since 2009 for the South West Land Division
  • Monthly rainfall totals were mostly less than 5 mm in the State's west, central and southeast, and several sites in the Eucla, South Coast and Southeast Coastal districts either had their driest December on record or driest December for over 20 years

Above average daytime temperatures across WA

  • It was Western Australia hottest December on record, with the State mean temperature 3.35 °C above average and more than half a degree warmer than the previous record in 1972
  • The State's mean maximum temperature was 4.25 °C above average, which was the highest on record for December, and about one and half a degree higher than the previous record in 1972
  • Amongst numerous December mean maximum temperature records across WA, it was the first time that inland Gascoyne and Southern Interior districts had their monthly means in excess of 40 °C
  • Giles's mean maximum temperature of 40.7 °C was 2 °C higher than its previous December record in 1972, which was exacerbated by a record run of 15 consecutive days of over 40 °C between the 17th and 31th with Christmas Day being its highest December temperature on record at 46.8°C
  • Record high December temperatures were reported in the north and south throughout December, though the State's far southeast had the hottest sites on the 19th
  • Eucla (town) and Forrest recorded 49.8 °C and 49.5 °C on the 19th respectively, which was not only their December record, but also the State's highest and second-highest December temperature on record
  • The State's mean minimum temperature was 2.44 °C above average, which was the highest on record; numerous sites across WA had their highest December mean minimum temperature on record
  • Record hot nights were observed in the west Kimberley on the 1st, in the Goldfields on the 7th, and in the Pilbara and Southern Interior towards the end of December
  • Telfer Aero in inland east Pilbara first equalled previous State's highest minimum temperature with 35.0 °C on the 27th, then toppled it with 35.1 °C on the 29th

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 8 January 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
