Tuesday, 3 March 2020 - Monthly Climate Summary for Western Australia - Product code IDCKGC11R0
Western Australia in February 2020: wet in western half; warm nights
February rainfall was near average to above average for most of the State's western half. Severe tropical cyclone Damien brought heavy rainfall to the central Pilbara, east Gascoyne and Northern Interior in early February. Thunderstorms produced moderate falls in the southern Gascoyne, South West Land Division and Goldfields late in February. Overnight temperatures were above average for most of the State apart from the far northwest and southeast, resulting in WA's fourth–highest mean minimum temperature on record for February.
Wet in the western half of WA
- February rainfall was near average to above average for most of the State's western half, and part of the Kimberley; February rainfall was 8% below average for WA as a whole
- Severe tropical cyclone Damien brought 100 mm to 300 mm to the central Pilbara, Northern Interior and east Gascoyne between the 8th and 10th
- Karratha Airport recorded a two–day rainfall total of 235.2 mm (8th and 9th), which was its wettest two days in February since 2006 when TC Emma brought 279.6 mm on 27 and 28 February
- Doolgunna and Bryah in the Gascoyne had daily rainfall in excess of 100 mm on the 10th, which was their wettest February day on record
- A tropical low (ex-TC Esther) produced 100–200 mm in the east Kimberley at the end of February; Ellenbrae and Lake Argyle Resort had their highest February daily rainfall on record
- A number of sites in the Central West district had their wettest February for more than 100 years from frequent thunderstorms and showers in late February
- Many sites in the South West Land Division (SWLD) had their wettest February for decades
Warmer than average nights for most of WA
- Mean minimum temperatures were above average for most of the State apart from the far northwest and southeast
- WA's mean minimum temperature was 1.29 °C above average, the fourth–highest on record
- Mean maximum temperatures were mostly near average, with above average maxima in the State's east and far southwest
- WA's mean maximum temperature was 1.07 °C above average
- Hot days with temperatures reaching the 40s started along the west coast on the 3rd then expanded over the SWLD till the 8th as the result of a slow-moving trough; a number of sites had their highest February temperature on record
- Northerly winds provided little relief from the heat overnight, and at Wagin (Great Southern) the temperature only dropped to 26.7 °C in the morning on the 7th from a high of 42 °C previous day, which was its all-time highest minimum temperature on record
- Argyle and Wyndham in the Kimberley had three and four nights with minimum temperature of 30 °C or above, which was their highest number of such nights in February, and the morning of the 26th was their warmest February morning on record respectively
- A number of sites in the Kimberley had their highest February mean minimum temperature on record
Severe tropical cyclone Damien
- Tropical cyclone Damien was named on the 6th to the northwest of Broome. Damien first moved west–southwest then south towards the Pilbara coast and intensified to a severe system (category 3) on the 7th
- Severe tropical cyclone Damien made landfall over the Karratha-Dampier region in the afternoon of the 8th. Damien and its remnant moved inland through the Pilbara, east Gascoyne and northern Goldfields districts for the next two days
- The Dampier weather radar sustained significant damage, and Karratha Airport recorded a 194 km/h wind gust on the 8th, which was its highest gust in 17 years of wind record
Thunderstorms in the SWLD in late February
- A persistent trough near the west coast combined with an upper level cut-off low pressure system to generate a series of thunderstorms in the SWLD, and particularly around Greater Perth between the 23th and 28th
- The State Emergency Service responded hundreds of requests for damage by gusty winds, with downed trees and water ingress in the Central West, Lower West and South West districts
Flooding in the Fitzroy River and Ord River catchments
- Ex-tropical cyclone Esther produced moderate to heavy rainfall in the east and west Kimberley at the end of February and the start of March.
- Moderate to major flooding had occurred at the Fitzroy River catchment, and the Ord River catchment reached moderate flooding level

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 3 March 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
