Western Australia in August 2020: very warm in the north

Daytime temperatures were warmer than average for most of Western Australia, and very warm in the north. Overnight temperatures were well above average for the two-thirds of the state. For the state as a whole, the mean maximum temperature ranked as the sixth-highest on record for August, and the mean minimum temperature was the fifth-highest on record. Rainfall was above average in the northwest, the western Eucla coast, and both the north and far south of the South West Land Division, though parts of the south-west saw below average rainfall.

Statewide rainfall slightly above average

  • For Western Australia as a whole, rainfall was about 6% above average.
  • The year-to-date rainfall was 10% below average for the January–August period for Western Australia.
  • Early in August, a cold front and associated low pressure system produced moderate daily rainfall in excess of 30 mm along the state's south coast between the 3rd and 6th, with heavier falls between 80 and 100 mm around and including Albany; many sites had their highest August daily rainfall on record.
  • A cloudband and cold front produced moderate fall to the western WA on the 9th and 10th, resulting in the state's northwest, and northern parts of the South West Land Division (SWLD) receiving above average rainfall.
  • Several sites in the South Coastal and Southeast Coastal Districts, including Esperance either had their wettest August on record; Eyre (a mid-point along the Eucla coast) and several sites in the Central West District had their wettest August for at least 20 years.

Very hot days in the north

  • The mean temperature was 1.75 °C above average, which was the fourth-highest for August on record, and highest since 2009 for Western Australia as a whole.
  • Mean maximum temperatures were above average for most of Western Australia, and well above average in the north, a number of sites in the north Kimberley had their warmest August days on record.
  • The state's mean maximum temperature was 2.10 °C above average, which was the sixth-highest for August on record.
  • Mean minimum temperatures were well above average for the two-thirds of the state apart from the far north and south-west, and several sites in the north-west and south-west either had their mildest August nights on record, or mildest August for at least 20 years.
  • The state's mean minimum temperature was 1.41 °C above average, which was the fifth-highest for August on record and highest since 1998.
  • The year-to-date mean maximum and minimum temperatures were second-highest and eighth-highest on record for the January–August period for Western Australia.
  • It was a very cold day in the south-west on the 3rd with daily maximum temperatures staying below 12 °C at several sites; a number of sites including Perth Metro had their coldest August day on record.
  • Extreme heat was built up and persisted in the state's north in late August from the 21st, then expanded to the south and southeast covering the eastern SWLD, Goldfields and Southern Interior towards the end of the month.
  • Many record high August temperatures were set, with several sites exceeding their previous August records on multiples days.
  • West Roebuck (about 10km east of Broome Airport) recorded 41.2 °C, Australia's highest August temperature on record on the 23rd, a day after Yampi Sound (75 km northeast of Derby) recorded the country's first 40 °C (40.7 °C on the 22nd) for August for 50 years (40.0 °C at Kulumburu Mission on 27 August 1970); along with 40.1 °C at West Roebuck on the 27th, the country had recorded three 40 °C days in August within a week.
  • Port Hedland Airport had 7 out of 9 days exceeded its previous August record (36.8 °C) between the 23rd and 31st; its maximum temperature of 39.9 °C on the 29th was 3.1 °C higher than its old record.
  • Marble Bar had exceeded its previous August record (38 °C) on 6 consecutive days between the 24th and 29th; Marble Bar had not recorded a single 38 °C in August prior to 2017, with records going back to 1901.
  • Telfer Aero had exceeded its previous August record (36.2 °C) on 6 consecutive days between the 24th and 29th.
  • Several sites in the state's north-west including Carnavon Airport and the south-east including Eucla (town) had their highest August mean daily minimum temperature on record, or highest for at least 20 years.

Strong winds and storm surge

  • A strong cold front produced severe winds gusts and a 50–70 cm storm surge along the west coast of WA on 9 August, though impacts were minimal due to low tides.
  • On the 9th, the highest wind gust was 109 km/h (59 kt) at Cape Naturaliste, as raised dust moved through Gascoyne, and the winds brought downed trees and caused minor roof damage in an area from Kalbarri to Albany, including Perth metropolitan area.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 1 September 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
