Western Australia in February 2021: wet and below average daytime temperatures

Rainfall was above average for most of Western Australia. Areas along the west coast recorded very much above average rainfall, and western Gascoyne areas had their wettest February on record. However, northern and western parts of the Kimberley recorded below average rainfall. Mean maximum temperatures were below average for most of the state, while mean minimum temperatures were generally near average.

Record wet in the Gascoyne

  • Rainfall was above average for most of WA, and the state averaged rainfall was 28% above average.
  • Many locations in the west Gascoyne, and western parts of the South West Land Division recorded their highest February rainfall total on record, or highest February rainfall for at least 20 years
  • Carnarvon Airport recorded a new February rainfall record of 186.2 mm, which is about 10 times its February average; Marron, located south-east of Carnarvon, recorded 189.4 mm, which was more than 8 times its average, and the sites's highest February rainfall in 109 years.
  • After a long track across inland Kimberley and Pilbara in late January and early February, a tropical low (12U) moved off the northern Gascoyne coast, near Carnavon on the 5th, then travelled south along the west coast and south-west of the state for a few days till the 8th. The low resulted in daily rainfall in excess of 100 mm to 150 mm in the northwest Gascoyne, and between 20 mm and 60 mm from the Central West down to the South West, including many February daily rainfall records.
  • Carnarvan Airport recorded a daily rainfall 137.2 mm on the 5th, which is nearly 50 mm more than its previous record set 50 years ago in 1970.

Below average mean maximum temperatures for most of WA

  • The mean maximum temperature for Western Australia was 1.09 °C below average, which made it the coolest February since 2011.
  • Mean maximum temperatures were below average for most of WA, some sites had their coolest February days on record or coolest for at least 20 years.
  • Cape Naturaliste and a number of other sites in the state's south-west had their coolest February day on record on the 7th or 8th.
  • The mean minimum temperature for Western Australia was 0.34 °C below average, the coolest February since 2012.

Tropical low (12U)

  • A tropical low (12U) tracked south-west through the inland Kimberly, Pilbara and northern Gascoyne districts, to offshore near Carnarvon on the 5th before tracking southward along the west coast and south-west till the 8th. The low brought significant rainfall to the state's north and west, caused extensive flooding and damage in the northwest. One of the hardest hit areas was in and around Carnarvon in the Gascoyne. Rain brought relief from the heat to the state's south-west, dampening fires in and south of Perth.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Monday 1 March 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
