Below average rainfall in the west

  • Rainfall was 32 % below average for Western Australia as a whole, although it was wetter than June 2020.
  • A cloudband moved across the west and central and south-eastern WA, and an associated cut-off low pressure system tracked across the state's far south-west, from the 9th to the 10th, to produce moderate daily rainfall totals in the west Pilbara, Gascoyne and the SWLD.
  • Exmouth Town in the west Pilbara coast recorded daily rainfall of 173.4 mm on the 10th, which was the state's highest June daily rainfall for 8 years since 25 June 2013 when daily rainfall totals of 180–220 mm were recorded in Roebourne and Karratha.
  • A strong cold front and associated low pressure system moved across the south-west of WA on the 20th and 21st, to bring widespread moderate rainfall to most of the SWLD; several SWLD coastal sites recorded their highest June daily rainfall on record, including a heavy downpour of 106 mm at Denmark on the 21st.
  • A number of sites in the South Coastal and South East Coastal districts had their wettest June rainfall for over 30 years.

Cold days and nights in the south-west WA

  • The mean maximum temperature was 0.66 °C below average, and the lowest maximum temperature since 1993 for Western Australia.
  • The mean minimum temperature was near average (-0.09 °C) for Western Australia; it was warmer in June 2020 but cooler in June 2019 for WA.
  • The mean temperature (average of maximum and minimum temperatures) was 0.37 °C below average for Western Australia, which was the coldest June for 10 years.
  • Most of WA observed cold days between the 21st and 25th, with maximum temperatures below 20 °C in the Pilbara, and down to 10 °C or below in the Central Wheat Belt, Great Southern and South East Coastal districts on the 21st; several sites had their coldest June day on record. on the 21st or the 22nd.
  • Several sites along the Pilbara coast and offshore islands had their coldest June days on record or coldest June days for at least 20 years
  • Most of WA observed cold nights between the 22nd and 26th, with sub-zero temperatures to –3 °C recorded in the Central Wheat Belt and Great Southern districts on the 25th and 26th; a number of sites in the Pilbara had their lowest June temperature on record.
  • Many sites in the west of the state had their coldest June (lowest June mean temperature) for at least 20 years; Carnarvon Airport had its coldest June for 39 years while Northam, Bencubbin and Perth Airport had their coldest June for 31 years.

Major flooding at Exmouth

  • A cloudband over the north-west of WA produced very heavy daily rainfall of 173.4 mm at Exmouth on the 10th, causing major flooding to the town.
  • Busselton recorded a high tide of 1.9 m with a residual of 68 cm Perth Barrack Street gauge recorded a high tide of 1.75 m with flash flooding along Riverside Drive.

Heavy rainfall, damaging winds and flooding between Denmark and Albany

  • A low pressure system moved along the south coast and produced thunderstorms and heavy daily falls in excess of 50 mm in the SWLD, and up to 106 mm at Denmark in the South Coastal District on the 21st.
  • Extensive flash flooding was reported between Denmark and Albany, with main roads closed for 2 days for repairs, and more than 10 thousands customers were without power for extended periods.
  • Denmark River at Denmark College recorded a peak of about 3.5 m around midnight on the 20th.
  • Damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h were recorded at Albany Airport (96 km/h on the 20th) and Rottnest Island (106 km/h on the 21st).

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 July 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
