Western Australia in October 2021: wet in the west, hot in the far north

October rainfall was above average in the west of Western Australia, but was near average to below average for the remainder of the state. For the South West Land Division, it was the wettest October for a decade. Daytime temperatures were very much above average in the Kimberley, while the south-west experienced cooler than normal days. Overnight temperatures were above average in the north Kimberley but below average mean minima were observed in the west Kimberley, Northern Interior and parts of the south-west. The mean maximum temperature for WA was above average although it was the lowest for October since 2011. The mean minimum temperature for WA was below average and the lowest for October for eighteen years.

Wet in the west

  • October rainfall was 22% above the 1961–1990 average for Western Australia, which was largely due to the west of the state being wetter than usual.
  • For the South West Land Division (SWLD), October rainfall was 66% above average, and the wettest October since 2011.
  • For south-western WA (roughly south-west a line between Jurien Bay and Bremer Bay), October rainfall was 58% above average, which was the wettest October for forty-four years since 1977.
  • Many sites in the SWLD had their highest total October rainfall on record, or highest total October rainfall for at least 20 year.
  • A cold front and associated cloudband moved across the west of the state and produced daily rainfall of 10-30 mm in the Central West and south-west Gascoyne on the 19th, including a number of records for October daily rainfall.
  • Thunderstorms produced showers with isolated heavy daily falls of 50 mm or higher in the Kimberley at the end of the month on both the 29th and 31st.
  • For the South West Land Division, cool season rainfall was 12% above average, which was the wettest April-October period since 2005

Hot days in the far north, cool days in the south-west

  • Western Australia's mean temperature was close to the 1961–1990 average at +0.08 °C, which was the coolest October for sixteen years.
  • The mean maximum temperature was 0.44 °C above average, although it was the lowest for October since 2011 for Western Australia.
  • The mean minimum temperature was 0.29 °C below average, and the lowest for October since 2003 for Western Australia.
  • Days were mostly hot with mean maximum temperatures in the high 30s to low 40s for much of the Kimberley except the west Kimberley at and south of Broome; a number of sites had their hottest October days on record.
  • Days were generally cool with mean maximum temperatures in the high 10s to mid 20s in the SWLD and southern Goldfields; and a number of sites had their coolest October on record or coolest October for at least 20 years.
  • A heatwave hit the north Kimberley in the second half of the month from the 19th and peaked on the 21st; Wyndham Aero recorded 45.1 °C on the 21st, its highest October temperature on record, and also the state's highest October temperature for seven years when 45.2 °C was recorded at Bidyadanga on 9 October 2014.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Monday 1 November 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
