Western Australia in November 2021: very wet overall, dry in the south-west

November rainfall was above to very much above average for most of Western Australia except western and northern parts of the state, and areas in the south-west recorded below average rainfall. Overall, Western Australia had its ninth-wettest November on record and wettest since 2012.

Mean maximum temperatures were below average across most of the state, but close to average along the west coast and in the far north, with the coastal Kimberley recording warmer than normal mean maximum temperatures. Mean minimum temperatures were generally near average with areas of below average minimum temperatures from the interior to the mid-west of the state. For the state as a whole, it was the coolest November since 2008 in terms of mean temperature and mean maximum temperature, while the mean minimum temperature was the lowest since 1992.

Above average rainfall for most of WA, below average rainfall in the south-west

  • For Western Australia, November rainfall was 92% above the 1961-1990 average, which was the ninth-wettest November on record, and wettest since 2012.
  • November rainfall was below average in parts of the south-west of the state and the south-west Gascoyne, with monthly totals of 10 mm or less, and only 20–40% of the November average.
  • Rainfall was above average in most of WA, and a number of sites in the south-eastern Gascoyne, Southern Interior and Eucla districts had their wettest November rainfall on record or wettest November for at least 20 years.
  • Giles MO in the Southern Interior recorded a monthly rainfall total of 132.6 mm, which was 451% of its November average and the second-wettest November on record, behind 136.4 mm in 1991.
  • A low pressure system in central WA, along with an associated trough produced thunderstorms and showers in the Gascoyne, Southern Interior, Goldfields and parts of the south-west between the 8th and 10th; a number of sites had their highest November daily rainfall on record.
  • On the 21st and 22nd, a cloudband extended from a tropical low (later became tropical cyclone Paddy) off north-west Australia to WA's south coast, while a low pressure system and associated cold front moved across the south, to produce moderate to heavy rainfall; a number of sites in the Gascoyne, Southern Interior and the state's south-west had their highest November daily rainfall on record.

Below average maximum temperatures for most of WA

  • For Western Australia, the mean temperature was 0.85 °C below the 1961-1990 average, the coolest November since 2008.
  • Mean maximum temperatures were below average for most of the state except in the far north and along the west coast; the mean maximum temperature was 0.83 °C below average, the lowest since 2008 for WA.
  • Mean minimum temperatures were generally near average, with areas of below average minima from the interior to the mid-west of the state; the mean minimum temperature was 0.89 °C below average, the lowest since 1992.
  • Cold days with maximum temperatures in the 10s were experienced in the south and central WA on the 9th and 10th; a number of sites had their lowest maximum temperature for November on record, and 13.5 °C at Kalgoorlie Airport is the state's lowest maximum temperature of the month.
  • Heat was building up and persisted in the west between the 26th and 28th, and shifted to the south-east on the 29th, while the heat also piled up in the north..
  • Carnarvon Airport recorded 3 consecutive days of 40 °C between the 26th and 28th, which was the second time of such a run in November at Carnarvon, and the other time was in 1996 between 8 and 11 November.
  • Marble Bar recorded 44.1 °C on the 30th, the state's highest temperature of the month.

Tropical cyclone Paddy

  • A tropical low intensified to a tropical cyclone and was named Paddy to the south-east of Christmas Island in the morning local time on 22 November.
  • Paddy was the first tropical cyclone of the 2021-2022 season in the Australian Region.
  • Paddy soon downgraded to a tropical low in the morning on the 24th, and the remnant dissipated on the 27th.
  • Paddy and its remnant moved predominately in south-westerly and westerly directions, and had not directly impacted on Australian's mainland or territories.
  • Paddy produced a period of moderate to heavy falls at Christmas Island between the 17th and 21st with a 5-day rainfall total of 251.2 mm, which was more than 80 mm above its November average.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Wednesday 1 December 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
