Western Australia in January 2022: wet in the east; very warm days in the west

Monthly rainfall was above to very much above average in eastern Western Australia from the Kimberley to Southern Interior districts, although western WA received little or zero rainfall. Mean maximum temperatures were above average in western WA, with records set for January temperatures in the north-west and consecutive days with maximum temperatures at least 40 degrees along the west coast. Mean minimum temperatures were above average for most of the state. For the state as a whole, monthly rainfall, mean maximum and minimum temperatures were above average.

Wet in the east of the state

  • January rainfall was above average in eastern parts of the state from the Kimberley to the Southern Interior, due to ex-tropical cyclone Tiffany, a monsoon trough and associated lows.
  • Western WA received little or zero rainfall for the month.
  • Rainfall was 24% above the 1961-1990 average for WA.
  • Monthly rainfall totals were in the range of 300–600 mm for most of the Kimberley, a number of sites had their wettest January on record or wettest January for at least 20 years
  • Fitzroy Crossing Aero recorded a total of 401 mm, the fourth-wettest January on record and the wettest since 1991 at Fitzroy Crossing with combined rainfall records starting in 1894.
  • Broome Airport recorded the highest all-time 2-day rainfall total on record with 564 mm (238 mm on 31 January and 326 mm on 1 February) as a tropical low moved across the south Kimberley. The previous 2-day rainfall record was 536.6 mm to 30 January 2018.

Above average daytime temperatures in the west of the state

  • Mean maximum temperatures were very much above average in the west of the state, and a number of sites in the south-west including Perth Metro had their highest January mean daily maximum temperature on record or highest for at least 20 years
  • WA mean maximum temperature was 1.2 °C above the 1961-1990 average.
  • Mean minimum temperatures were above average for most of WA, and the mean minimum temperature was 0.54 °C above the 1961-1990 average for the state as a whole.
  • A very hot airmass drove temperatures more than 40 °C in the north and central WA between the 12th and 14th, and up to 50 °C near the Pilbara coast on the 13th; a number of sites had their highest January temperature on record.
  • Onslow Airport recorded a maximum temperature of 50.7 °C on the 13th, which was the highest temperature in WA, and equalled with the all-time temperature in the country set 62 years ago at Oodnadatta in South Australia on 2 January 1960.
  • Roebourne Airport and Mardie recorded 50.5 °C on the 13th, which was the equal second-highest temperature for WA and the equal third-highest for Australia.
  • A prolonged severe heatwave hit the west coast WA between the 18th and 23rd, with many sites in the Central West and Lower West districts including Perth reporting their record long run of days at or above 40 °C.
  • The Perth January climate summary provided a list of records for the Greater Perth.
  • Geraldton Airport in the Central West recorded 6 consecutive days wit maximum temperatures of at least 43 °C, which was the all-time longest run in 113 years of record at Geraldton. The previous record was a run of 5 days in 24–29 December 2021.
  • Kalbarri, north of Geraldton, recorded 6 consecutive days with maximum temperatures of at least 42 °C, which was the all-time longest run in 45 years of record at Kalbarri. The previous record was a run of 5 days.
  • Maximum temperatures only reached the mid-20s in the inland Kimberley on the 14th and 15th during the passage of ex-tropical cyclone Tiffany; Argyle Aero and Fitzroy Crossing Aero had their lowest maximum temperature for January on record.
  • Marble Bar recorded a minimum temperature of 34.6 °C on the 13th, which was the highest minimum temperature for 106 years at Marble Bar, and the third-highest on record, behind 35.1 °C on 24 January 1916 and 35.0 °C on 28 December 1902
  • A number of sites in the south-west had their warmest night in January on the 19th.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Tuesday 1 February 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
