Western Australia in September 2022: Wettest September on record for parts of the Pilbara and Gascoyne

Rainfall in September was 30% above average for Western Australia as a whole. It was the highest September rainfall since 2010 and the third-highest September rainfall on record (since records began in 1900). Large parts of the Pilbara and Gascoyne districts received their highest September rainfall on record. Monthly totals were very much above average into the Goldfields and most of the Southern Interior and Kimberley districts. Temperatures were below average for Western Australia as a whole. Daytime temperatures were the coolest since 2016 and cooler than average everywhere apart from the Kimberley, Northern Interior and South West districts. Nights were warmer than average almost state-wide with parts of the Kimberley up to 4 °C above average.

A very wet September

  • For Western Australia as a whole, September rainfall was 30% above average.
  • Rainfall in the top 10% of historical records was recorded across approximately two-thirds of the State.
  • It was the wettest September since 2010 and the third wettest September overall.
  • On 3 September, as a trough associated with a low pressure system crossed the Gascoyne, 15% of Western Australia's area experienced its highest September daily rainfall on record.
  • A cloud band associated with this trough produced moderate to heavy rainfall (30 to 60mm) and thunderstorms over the southern Pilbara and Gascoyne.
  • A flood watch was issued for the Gascoyne Coast and Southern Pilbara with localised flooding occurring.
  • Numerous secondary roads were closed and both the North West Coastal and Great Northern Highways had water over the road in places (though roads were not closed to any vehicles).
  • Rainfall totals for the first 7 days of September were 40-80 mm in the inland Pilbara, Gascoyne, Central West, Lower West and Central Wheat Belt; about 10 times the September average, making it already the wettest September on record.
  • Inland storms brought more than 25 mm rainfall to the Southern Interior on 11 September.
  • A cold front brought more than 25 mm rainfall to the South West on 13 September.
  • A slow-moving upper low over the Gascoyne brought unseasonal showers and thunderstorms to the Kimberley and Interior on 30 September.
  • Many sites had their highest September daily rainfall on record.
  • Many sites had their highest total September rainfall on record or their highest total September rainfall for at least 20 years.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 4 October 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.

Information about Australian Indigenous seasonal calendars is available at the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website.
