Western Australia in November 2022: Fourth wettest November on record

It was the fourth-wettest November on record for Western Australia (since comparable records began in 1900) and the wettest November since 2011. Rainfall in November was more than twice the average for Western Australia as a whole. Highest on record November rainfall was recorded for parts of the Kimberley district. Monthly rainfall totals were below average for much of the Pilbara, northern Gascoyne, and northern Goldfields districts. Daytime temperatures were cooler than average across most of the state, with the southwest Kimberley and eastern Pilbara recording the lowest mean maxima on record. It was the coolest November since 1992 for Western Australia as a whole. Nights were cooler than average for most of the north and west of the state, and it was the coolest statewide November nights since 1976 for Western Australia.

Very wet for northern parts and the south coast

  • For Western Australia as a whole, November rainfall was 121% above the 1961-1990 average.
  • Rainfall in the top 10% of historical records for November was recorded across the northern parts of the State, as well as along the southern coast.
  • A slow-moving band of showers and thunderstorms affected the Central Wheat Belt and adjacent parts of the Lower West and Great Southern districts on the 8th, bringing moderate to heavy falls. Wongan Hills was just one site to experience its highest November daily rainfall on record, with 61.4 mm (previous record 38.6 mm on 17 November 1983 from 115 years of data).
  • The passage of a cold front coupled with tropical moisture brought record high November daily rainfall to Eucla with 42.8 mm on the 18th. From 109 years of record, the previous record was 42.2 mm on 4 November 1980.
  • In the north, several low pressure troughs brought early wet season showers and thunderstorms to the Kimberley and Northern Interior which affected minor roads and mine sites. From the 22nd to the 26th a trough heralded the wettest November days on record in many places around the Kimberley, including at Derby Aero with 115.0 mm on the 23rd (previous record 38 mm on 18 November 1998 from 62 years of data) and Lansdowne with 103.8 mm on the 23rd (previous record 83.0 mm on 24 November 2002 from 39 years of data).
  • Many stations in the Kimberley district observed their highest November rainfall on record, including Lansdowne with 355.2 mm (previous record 151.0 mm from 2002 from 39 years of data) and Argyle Aerodrome with 221.4 mm (previous record 149.6 mm from 1991 from 36 years of data).
  • Some sites had their highest total November rainfall on record.
  • Some sites had their highest total November rainfall for at least 20 years.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 5 December 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.

Information about Australian Indigenous seasonal calendars is available at the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website.
