Western Australia in July 2023

Rainfall

  • It was an unseasonably wet start to July in the Kimberley, following a wet end to June. Widespread daily rainfall of 15–50 mm was recorded on the 1st and 2nd, with isolated heavier falls of up to 90 mm, and several new July daily rainfall records.
  • Argyle Aero recorded a monthly total of 65 mm, which was double its previous wettest July record set in 1986.
  • A dozen or so sites in the Kimberley had their July records broken, or their wettest July for at least 20 years.
  • Rainfall was below average for the western and southern half of WA, with July totals of 50–100 mm reported in the southwest between Jurien Bay and east of Albany, and along the Esperance coast. Monthly totals between 100 mm and 200 mm were recorded in the far southwest in and around Perth and to the south.
  • For the South West Land Division(SWLD)as a whole, July rainfall was about 38 mm, the driest July since 2012 (29 mm).
  • For WA as a whole, July rainfall was about 11.6 mm, which was 44% below the 1961–1990 average.

Temperature

  • Mean maximum temperatures were above average in the southern and western WA, and close to average for the rest of the state.
  • The state-wide averaged mean maximum temperature was 1.03 °C above the 1961–1990 average, but it was the coolest July since 2016(an anomaly of +0.34 °C).
  • Mean minimum temperatures were below average for a large area from the western Pilbara and Gascoyne down to western Eucla district. Mean minimum temperatures were above average in the far south SWLD.
  • The state-wide averaged mean minimum temperature was 0.19 °C below the 1961–1990 average, although July last year had cooler overnight temperatures(an anomaly of -0.62 °C).
  • Wet and cloudy conditions resulted in a number of sites in the Kimberley having their coldest July day (lowest maximum temperature) on record on the 1st.
  • The Great Southern forecast district observed 9 to 10 frosty nights with minimum temperatures at or below 2 °C, about the same number as in July last year.
  • There were about 15 to 16 frosty nights in the eastern Central Wheat Belt forecast district, about 5 nights (50%) more than July last year.
  • Eyre in the western Eucla district coast, recorded 10 freezing nights with minimum temperatures below 0 °C, which was double its July average (4.8 nights). A minimum temperature of -5.9 °C on the 17th was its lowest July temperature record, the third-lowest temperature in July on record for the state, and the lowest July temperature for 33 years since -6.5 °C was recorded at Murchison on 1 July 1990.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Tuesday 1 August 2023. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
