Western Australia in June 2024

Rainfall

  • June rainfall totals ranged from 100–200 mm along the west and southwest coast of the state, and the inland Central West district, to 50–100 mm in the western and northern South West Land Division (SWLD), much of the Gascoyne, and northern Goldfields. Monthly rainfall totals were 10–50 mm for the remainder of the state apart from the Kimberley.
  • Rainfall was above average in the Gascoyne and west Pilbara, extending to the central and south-eastern parts of the state, as well as the eastern Kimberley. Areas in the southern Gascoyne, northern SWLD, and Southern Interior districts recorded a very wet June, and many rainfall observation sites recorded either their highest total June rainfall on record, or their highest total June rainfall for at least 20 years.
  • Rainfall was below average for the central and southwest coast of the SWLD.
  • Rainfall was 36.2 mm for WA as a whole, which was 35% above average (26.8 mm), and the wettest June since 2016 (37.6 mm).
  • Rainfall was 75.8 mm for the SWLD as a whole, which was slightly (3%) below average (78.0 mm). Rainfall was 79.6 mm in June 2023 for the SWLD.
  • A handful of winter cold fronts tracked across the state's west and south during June, whilst a couple of northwest cloudbands developed during the middle of the month, and a cut-off low pressure system crossed the Central West coast then weakened in the central WA towards the end of June. Widespread moderate to locally heavy daily rainfall was recorded as the result, and several sites had their highest June daily rainfall on record.
  • Kalbarri in the Central West coast recorded daily rainfall of 72.4 mm on the 27th, which was its June highest daily rainfall on record, and the 3rd-highest daily rainfall for any month, behind 145.2 mm on 27 May 1999, and 89.0 mm on 21 May 1988.
  • A June rainfall total of 317.1 mm at Kalbarri is its highest monthly rainfall for any month. Its previous wettest month was May 1999 (296.5 mm), and the wettest June was in 1991 (159.0 mm).
  • Mullewa in the inland Central West recorded a June total of 215.8 mm, which was its June record, and the 2nd-wettest month on record, and wettest month for nearly 115 years (238 mm in August 1909). Mullewa has 127 years of rainfall observations commencing in 1896.

Temperature

  • Mean maximum temperatures were above average across most of the state.
  • Mean minimum temperatures were above average for the southern two-thirds of the state and much of west and central Pilbara. Several sites had their mildest June nights (highesy mean minimum temperature) on record, or mildest June nights for at least 20 years. In contrast, mean minimum temperatures were below average in the eastern Kimberley.
  • For Western Australia, the mean maximum temperature was 1.12 °C above the 1961–1990 average, which was the 12th-warmest June on record, and warmest since 2020 (the warmest June on record with a mean maximum temperature of 2.52 °C above average).
  • For Western Australia, the mean minimum temperature was 1.22 °C above the 1961–1990 average, which was the 14th-warmest June on record, and warmest since 2016 (the 12th-warmest June on record with a mean minimum temperature of 1.29 °C above average).
  • For the SWLD, the mean minimum temperature was 1.4 °C above the 1961–1990 average, which was the equal 10th-warmest June on record, along with June 1947, and the warmest June for 20 years since 2004 (the 6th-warmest June with a mean minimum temperature of 1.61 °C above average).
  • Cloudy conditions and northerly winds ahead of a cold front saw several sites in the western WA had their warmest June night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record on the 6th, 9th and 10th
  • Cold southerly winds resulted in a number of very cold nights with sub-zero temperatures in the inland southwest of the state on the 25th and 26th. The lowest temperautre of the month was −1.4 °C at Newdegate Research Station on the 26th.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Monday 1 July 2024. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
