Rainfall
The statewide average rainfall for spring was 99.8 mm, which is below the historical average1 of 128.4 mm. The Mid North Coast was the only area to report above average rainfall. Heavy falls recorded in the area at the end of October and early November resulted in Coffs Harbour flooding for the 5th time this year. Large parts of inland NSW reported below average rainfall for spring overall. Spring 2009 was very changable with significant shifts in wind and rainfall patterns across the state each month. The dominant dry westerly winds throughout the month resulted in below average rainfall along the coast. In October the wind regime was dominantly easterly which produced falls constricted mostly to the coast throughout the month. The western and southwestern parts of NSW recorded below average falls during October. In November western NSW recorded above average rainfall which resulted in overall average rainfall for spring. The eastern two thirds of the state, except the northeast coast, recorded below average falls during November and overall for spring. An El Niño event has matured in the Pacific, and these events are usually (but not always) associated with below average rainfall for areas west of the divide.
Murray Darling Basin recorded a basin wide average of 92.0 mm, which is below the historical average1 of 118.1 mm.
Some sites had their highest total spring rainfall on record. Some sites had their lowest total spring rainfall on record.
See a map of rainfall deciles.
Temperature
The statewide average maximum temperature for spring was 26.9°C, which is +2.6°C above the historical average1 of 24.3°C. This the 3rd warmest spring for NSW on record. Most of the state recorded temperatures up to 3°C above the average with some inland areas recording up to 4°C anomalies for spring. A warm start to spring in September resulted in large areas of the state recording temperatures up to 3°C above average with slightly milder conditions recorded in October. The warm conditions experienced during both September and October were partly due to warm northwesterly winds ahead of cool changes (low pressure troughs and cold fronts). November was a record warm month. This was primarily due to a heatwave between the 7th and 22nd of the month which resulted in many location across NSW breaking their monthly, daily temperature records. Southeast Australia has experienced three heatwaves so far this year which has already resulted in the 2nd warmest winter and 3rd warmest spring on record. Ten out of the eleven months so far this year recording above average maximum temperatures.
The statewide average minimum temperature for spring was 11.9°C, which is +1.6°C above the historical average1 of 10.3°C. This is the warmest spring on record for average minimum and mean (average of the maximum and minimum temperatures) across NSW. Large parts of NSW recorded temperatures up to 2°C above average with some parts recording up to 3°C above average. Daily maximum and minimum temperature records were broken during the November heatwave which also set new records for the spring statewide daily maximum and minimum temperature, 46.8°C at Wanaaring PO on 20th November and 33.3°C recorded at White Cliffs Airport on the 19th respectively.
An El Niño event has matured in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. These events are usually (but not always) associated with above average temperatures in eastern Australia. Very high temperatures experienced throughout winter and spring are likely due to the current influence of El Niño combined with the background, long-term warming that has been observed across Australia since the start of last century.

Some sites had their highest spring mean daily maximum temperature on record.

Other phenomena
NSW experienced two large and extensive dust storms. The more extreme occurred on the 23rd of the month resulting in reduced visibility at many locations. On the morning of the 23rd visibility in Sydney was reduced to 400 metres over much of the city. A thick layer of red dust coated all exposed surfaces with many flights delayed or cancelled at Sydney Airport. The dust, originated from South Australia and western NSW, and traversed across the state affecting areas as far north as Cairns. A few days later, strong winds again caused raised dust on the 25th reducing visibility to 800 m at 3 pm at Broken Hill with the dust extending to Sydney by the morning of the 26th.
Some raised dust was recorded in the Riverina on the 2nd of the month which was associated with a cold front and trough. Thunderstorms with hail were recorded in the Sydney area (pea-sized) and Grafton (20 cent coin size) on the 5th. A low pressure trough and cool southerly airstream resulted in snowfalls of up to 12 cm in Bombala, Jindabyne and Cooma on the 7th of the month.
Several fires in the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast districts were burning during October. The heavy falls recorded on the 27th and the following days provided much needed relief and extinguished most of the fires that were burning in the area. These heavy falls also resulted in moderate flooding on the Mid North Coast namely at Bellingen, Nambucca and Orara.
The Mid North Coast received siginificant falls between the 6th and 9th of November with the heaviest falls recorded on the 7th of November. Coffs Harbour received 98.6 mm on the 6th, 360.2 mm of rain on the 7th and 54.8 mm on the 9th which resulted in flooding in the area for the 5th time this year with the most recent heavy falls (preceding this event) recorded on the 27th October. The wet conditions were due to a trough and moist easterly winds triggering heavy rainfall. Several fires burning on the Mid North Coast were extinguished during the heavy falls at the start of the month. However, dry thunderstorms ignited fires in the Blue Mountains on the 20th November with lightning causing a couple of house fires in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. Extensive fires have also been burning west of Torrington in the Northern Tablelands district and northeast of Narrabri. Widespread thunderstorms have been reported across the state throughout November. A thunderstorm with pea sized hail was reported in Katoomba on the 2nd of November. Nearly golf sized hail was reported at Murwillumbah on the 17th, 3 cm hail reported at Mullumbimby on the 18th, and peasized hail reported north of Cessnock on 20th.

Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 1 December 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
