Rainfall
The statewide average rainfall for summer was 231.1 mm which is above the historical average1 of 170.4 mm and is the highest rainfall since the summer of 2007/08 when 254.2 mm were recorded statewide. The above average rainfall was due to three major rainfall events throughout summer. Widespread rain fell across NSW on Christmas Day and continued into the new year. This was due to an inland low pressure system associated with the ex-tropical cyclone Laurence. This resulted in major flooding of several northern inland rivers. The second major rainfall event was associated with another ex-tropical cyclone Olga, which produced falls across the north western parts of New South Wales in early February. Following this, on the 13th - 14th of February an upper level low and a surface low pressure trough extending from northwest to southeast NSW interacted with the high humidity present across the state and produced major falls. This rainfall event combined with rainfall earlier falls resulted in many locations under the trough line recording four times their February rainfall. The resulting rainfall deciles map shows extensive areas with above average falls, particularly in the northwest, central and southeast of the state. Recent rainfall over Australia appears fairly typical of past El Niño breakdowns. January 2007 (mainly SA/western Vic), February 2003, April 1998, January 1995, March 1983 and February 1973 all produced good rainfalls on the back of an El Niño event.
The Murray Darling Basin recorded a basin wide average of 208.7 mm which is above the historical average1 of 144.3 mm and is the 13th wettest summer on record.

Temperature
The statewide average mean temperature for NSW was 25.2°C which is 1°C above the historical average1 of 24.2°C. The above average temperatures are a result of warm northerly air flow over the state particularly in January, and higher humidity which prevents overnight cooling. This resulted in both above average maximum and minimum temperatures and ranks as the 11th warmest summer for average mean temperatures. An El Niño event matured and began to decay throughout summer and these events are usually (but not always) associated with above average temperatures in eastern Australia. Warm temperatures experienced during summer as well as winter and spring 2009 are likely due to the influence of El Niño combined with the background, long-term warming that has been observed across Australia since the start of the century.
Maximum temperature
Statewide average maximum temperature for summer is 32.1°C, which is 0.9°C above the historical average1 of 31.2°C. Coastal and southern NSW were up to 2°C above average with the remainder of the state being within a degree of the average. Parts of the northwest were up to 1°C below average and this is partly due to the rainfall and overcast conditions over the area associated with ex-tropical cyclone Olga and the active low pressure trough in the middle of February which produced substantial falls over that area.
Some sites had their highest summer mean daily maximum temperature on record.See a map of mean maximum temperatures.
See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.
Minimum temperature
The average minimum temperature for the state was 18.3°C, which is 1.2°C above the historical average1 of 17.1°C. All of the state recorded above average minimum temperatures with most of coastal, inland and southern NSW recording up to 2°C above the historical average1. An area northwest of ACT was up to 3°C above average.
Some sites had their lowest summer temperature on record. Some sites had their warmest summer night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.
Some sites had their highest summer mean daily minimum temperature on record.

Other phenomena
Widespread rainfall across NSW which began late on Christmas Day and continued through till early January resulted in flooding in northern inland areas such as Coonamble, Dubbo, Gilgandra and the Macquarie region amongst others.
Heavy rainfall that fell during early to mid February caused major flooding in the southeast and far west NSW. Emergency services minister, Steve Whan announced a natural disaster declaration for the Bega and Eurobodalla local government areas in the state's southeast as well as for the Central Darling and Cobar Shire's in the state's far west.
A strong upper level low produced snowfalls down to 900m above sea level on the 18th of January affecting parts of the Southern Tablelands districts namely Thredbo and Cooma.

Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Monday 1 March 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation
Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
