Rainfall
It was the wettest spring on record for NSW (records since 1900), with above average rainfall recorded throughout September (51.1 mm), October (92.1 mm) and November (102.6 mm). The statewide average rainfall totalled 245.7 mm, which is well above the historical average1 of 124.0 mm. This surpasses the previous spring record of 239.9 mm, set in spring 1917, which occurred during the particularly wet La Niña event of 1916-1918.
Similarly, the Murray Darling Basin (MDB) experienced its wettest spring on record, recording a basin-wide average of 235.5 mm. This is more than double the historical spring average of 114.3 mm, and surpasses the previous spring record of 227.9 mm, set in 1917.
The wet conditions experienced by NSW and the MDB throughout spring can be attributed to two main climate influences; the moderate to strong La Niña event in the Pacific Ocean and the negative Dipole event in the Indian Ocean. These events brought widespread above-average rainfall to much of Australia during winter and spring 2010, and resulted in Australia's wettest spring on record.
Some sites had their highest total spring rainfall on record.See a map of rainfall deciles.
Temperature
Day-time temperatures were cooler than average during spring, which is consistent with the pattern expected during a La Niña event. The statewide average1 maximum temperature during the season was 23.2°C, which is 1.1°C below the historical average of 24.3°C. This is the coolest spring since 1992 for NSW (22.6°C), and the 7th coolest spring on record for statewide average maximum temperatures (current record is 21.5°C set in spring 1956).
Night-time temperatures were warmer than average during spring, associated with the La Niña enhanced rainfall and cloud cover during the season. The statewide average minimum temperature during spring was 10.8°C, which is 0.5°C above the historical average of 10.3°C. This is the 7th consecutive spring with above average minimum temperatures for NSW.
The statewide average mean temperature for spring was 17.0°C, which is 0.3°C below the historical average of 17.3°C. This is the coolest spring since 1992 (16.2°C) for statewide average mean temperatures.
Some sites had their lowest spring mean daily maximum temperature on record.

Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Wednesday 1 December 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall or temperature) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
1Averages: Averages are based on the period 1961 to 1990 which is a convention of the World Meteorological Organisation Normals are long-term averages based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record for temperature and less than 30 years of record for rainfall, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
