NSW in autumn 2011: 6th coldest Autumn on record

  • Close to average rainfall
  • 6th coldest Autumn on record
  • Coolest Autumn since 1995

Rainfall

NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 136.1 mm during Autumn, slightly below the historical average of 142.7 mm. This is slightly drier than Autumn 2010, and similar to Autumn 2009 (127.65 mm). The majority of the rain fell during March, particularly in the south and west of the state, while both April and May recorded slightly below average rainfall as the influence of the 2010/11 La Niña event on NSW rainfall waned. Rainfall remained slightly above average in the Murray-Darling Basin during Autumn, at 122.3 mm compared to the historical average of 118.9 mm, dominated by the heavy rainfall during March.

The majority of the state had close to average rainfall during the season, with wettest conditions in the west of the state during March while April and May rainfall was most significant along the coast. The most significant daily totals occurred on the 22nd of March, with falls of up to 398 mm at Mt Darragh associated with a low pressure system. This caused widespread flooding along the South Coast and in the Illawarra regions, following flash flooding in the Sydney Metropolitan region on the 20th associated with the same event.

Temperature

Mean daily temperatures during Autumn averaged 16.9 °C, 0.7 °C below the historical average and the 6th coolest on record. This was the coldest Autumn since 1995, associated with both below average maximum and minimum temperatures during the season.

Maximum temperatures were below average during Autumn, with a statewide average of 23.4 °C compared to the historical average of 24 °C. This was the 10th coolest on record, and the coolest Autumn daytime temperatures since 1995. Most of the state recorded below average temperatures during the season, particularly in southern regions. This was due to well below average temperatures in March during the end of the La Niña event, associated with the heavy rainfall in southern parts, as well as peristent southwesterly winds driving cool conditions in May.

Minimums were also below average during Autumn, with a statewide average of 10.5 °C compared to the historical average of 11.3 °C, the 15th coolest on record. Minimums were above average during March, associated with above average rainfall and cloud cover, while temperatures cooled during April and May, particularly in inland regions. The warmest minimums during the season were recorded offshore, with both Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island recording temperatures more than a degree warmer than anywhere in mainland NSW, associated with persistent warm sea surface temperatures.

Some sites had their highest autumn temperature on record. Some sites had their coldest autumn day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. Some sites had their lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record.

Some sites had their lowest autumn temperature on record. Some sites had their warmest autumn night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Notes

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Wednesday 1 June 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
