Rainfall
NSW recorded 98.3 mm of rain during winter, below the historical average of 116.0 mm. Rainfall was particularly low during July, with closer to average falls during June and August. The majority of the rain fell in coastal parts of the state, with several significant East Coast Low events during winter and well above average rainfall on the Central and North Coasts, including the wettest winter in at least 40 years at Kempsey, Grafton, Forster, and Yarras. Rainfall was especially high during an East Coast Low in June, with record daily rainfall at several stations.
In comparison, rainfall was below average across most of the state west of the divide, with an average of just 74 mm in the MDB, well below the historical average of 111.1 mm and the driest winter since 2002. Most of western NSW had below average rainfall during all three winter months, but particularly during June, the 8th driest on record for the MDB and the driest since 1986.
Some sites had their highest total winter rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest winter daily rainfall on record. See a map of rainfall deciles.Temperature
Maximum temperatures were well above average across NSW during winter at 17.5 °C, 1.3 °C above the historical average of 16.2 °C. This was the 3rd warmest winter on record for maximum temperatures, although significantly cooler than the record winter temperatures of 2009 (17.8 °C). Temperatures were above average in all three months, associated with generally clear conditions, above average sunshine, and well below average rain in inland regions, with particularly warm temperatures during early August.
Most of the state recorded above average maximum temperatures during winter, particularly in regions west of the divide where rainfall was low, much of which had temperatures more than 1 °C above average. Maximum temperatures were particularly warm in southern NSW, with record average maximums recorded at Canberra Airport, Hume Reservoir, Tumbarumba and Narrandera, as well as the warmest since 1897 at Hay. The only area with slightly below average temperatures during winter was on the North Coast, associated with above average rainfall in this area.
Minimum temperatures were also above average during winter, at 4.5 °C compared to the historical average of 4.3 °C, with most of the state recording temperatures within 1 °C of average. Minimums were slightly below average during both June and July, particularly in western areas where rain was low, but well above average during August across the state. The mean temperature during winter was consequently 11 °C, the 14th consecutive winter to exceed the historical average of 10.2 °C.
Some sites had their coldest winter day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. Some sites had their highest winter mean daily maximum temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest winter temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest winter mean daily minimum temperature on record.

Other phenomena
Several East Coast Lows occurred during winter, bringing significant rainfall to coastal NSW. The first, 12-16 June, caused daily falls as high as 250 mm, with substantial flooding in the Kempsey and Taree regions and Natural Disaster declarations in 20 LGAs. Two further events caused substantial rain and strong winds in the Metropolitan, Illawarra and Hunter regions between 20-23 July and 20-22 August, although damage was minor in these cases.

Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Thursday 1 September 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
