Rainfall
NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 261 mm during summer, well above the historical average of 171 mm. This is the 9th wettest summer on record for NSW, although drier than the summer of 2010-11 when 281.2 mm was recorded. The Murray Darling Basin also recorded 243.3 mm during summer, well above the historical average of 144.6 mm and the 6th wettest on record. Rainfall was above average across most of the state during the season, which was the wettest summer on record at Yarras in the northeast and Cooma in the south, while 31 stations had their wettest summer in at least 20 years. The sustained wet conditions during summer followed the wet end to spring, and were largely influenced by the La Niña event in the Pacific Ocean during the season.
Rainfall was above average throughout the season, with several significant rain and flooding events, particularly in the northeast. Early in December, a heavy rain event in northern NSW between the 6th and 8th exacerbated existing flooding following November rain, while an East Coast Low between the 16th and 18th of January brought daily falls as high as 105 mm at Boat Harbour (Rous River). This was followed by a very significant rain event across northern NSW between the 23rd and 29th of January, with large areas exceeding 100 mm for several consecutive days, reaching 290 mm at Meerschaumvale on the 26th. This triggered additional flooding along the north coast, particularly in the Tweed region, with tens of thousands of people isolated. Heavy rainfall continued in northern NSW between the 1st and 3rd of February, with continued flooding along the north coast as well as the northwest, including the isolation of Moree.
In southern NSW, a significant rain event developed towards the end of February, with daily totals as high as 123 mm in Coolamon on the 29th, its wettest day on record, with minor flooding along the Tumut and Murray rivers and parts of Cooma evacuated. By the end of February, National Disasters had been declared in 25 Local Government Areas, as a result of the flooding during the season.
Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest summer daily rainfall on record. See a map of rainfall deciles.
Temperature
The statewide average temperature in NSW during summer was 23.1 °C, 1.1 °C below the historical average. This was the 4th coldest summer in NSW since records began in 1950, and the coldest since summer 1983-4 (23.0 °C). The cool temperatures, particularly during the day, were associated with above average rainfall and cloudiness during the season, which is typical for NSW during La Niña summers. Conditions were particularly cold during December, which was the 4th coldest on record for NSW; however, temperatures remained below average across the season, particularly in the northeast.
The average maximum temperature in NSW during summer was 29.51 °C, 1.71 °C below the historical average. This is the 2nd coldest summer for NSW since records began in 1950, and the coldest since NSW experienced temperatures 1.68 °C below average in 1983-4. The coldest summer ever recorded in NSW was in 1955/6, with a statewide average of 29.46 °C. Summer was particularly cool in northeastern NSW, with 30 stations experiencing their coldest summer on record, while an additional 16 stations experienced their coldest summer in at least 20 years. The coolest conditions during summer occurred in December, which was the 4th coldest on record for maximum temperatures in NSW and 2.5 °C below average, with large parts of northeastern NSW more than 4 °C below average.
NSW recorded a statewide average minimum temperature of 16.6 °C during summer, also below the historical average of 17.1 °C. This was the coldest summer for night-time temperatures since 1995-6, although only the 15th coldest on record, with the increased cloud cover moderating overnight temperatures. Most of the state recorded temperatures within 1 °C of average during the season, with slightly above average temperatures in southern NSW and coolest conditions in the north. Two notable cold snaps occurred during the season, with Katoomba, Taralga and Goulburn experiencing their coldest summer night on record on December 5, and Trangie breaking its record for minimum temperatures on January 12, with the latter event the subject of a Special Climate Statement.
Some sites had their lowest summer mean temperature on record. Some sites had their coldest summer day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. Some sites had their lowest summer mean daily maximum temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest summer temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest summer mean daily minimum temperature on record.

Other phenomena
Several severe thunderstorms impacted NSW during summer, with heavy hourly totals triggering several instances of flash flooding. These included in the central coast in December, with hourly totals as high as 65 mm at Gosford on the morning of the 12th, while flash flooding was reported in Broken Hill on January 27th. There were several flash flooding events across the state during February, including in Taree on the 8th, Picton on the 10th, and parts of Sydney overnight on the 10th and 20th.
Inland NSW was also impacted by flooding throughout the summer, as floodwaters from Queensland and northern NSW progressed through the Darling system. In particular, flooding on the Namoi and Barwon-Darling rivers resulted in the isolation of areas including Lightning Ridge, Collarenebri, Walgett, Wee Waa and Mungindi for much of February.

Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 March 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
